Biography
Son of an Italian peasant, Frank Capra immigrated to the United States when he was only six years old. After studying chemistry and his military service, he worked in several small trades then went into exile in California where he worked as an assistant editor, props and gagman, first at Hal Roach Studios then for Mack Sennett's productions. In 1922, he tried his hand at directing for the first time with a short film called The Ballad of Fisher's Boarding House. 4 years later, he wrote Plein les pieds and directed a burlesque film called The Incomplete Athlete, his very first feature film. He directs Harry Langdon, one of the most famous burlesque actors at the time. Capra collaborates with the comedian again on Her Last Panties a year later.
In 1928, he signed an exclusive contract with Columbia Pictures studios, which gave him carte blanche. This collaboration will generate 25 films that allow the small studio to compete with the Hollywood majors . In 1931, he teamed up for the first time with screenwriter Robert Riskin on The Platinum Blonde, a light comedy in which Jean Harlow played the blonde in the title. Capra and Riskin then film The Rush, a human drama set against the backdrop of the Great Depression. The association of the two men marks the beginning of social awareness in their films. Little by little the characteristics are emerging that will make Capra's paw: a naive and idealistic hero who attacks the entire system alone.
This is when the Italian-American director finally tastes success with Grande Dame d'un jour (which won him the Oscar for best director), where a tramp tries to pass herself off as a woman of the gentility. Follows his iconic New York-Miami (1934) with Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert. It is the first film in Oscar history to win the top five statuettes: film, director, actor, actress and original screenplay. With You Will Not Take It With You, which tells an impossible love story between the son of a billionaire and a girl from a modest class, Frank Capra won the Oscar for best picture for the second time in a row and that of the best director for the third time in a row. Crowned with immense public success,
After this rich and intense period in the artist's career, L'Homme de la rue, shot just before the Americans entered World War II, explores the same themes dear to Capra: social misery, political corruption, exhibition media, etc. 1941 marks the political engagement of the filmmaker, anxious to contribute to the war effort against the Nazi enemy. As a result, Capra participates in the making of a dozen propaganda films, the most famous of which is Prelude to war. His only commercial film screened during the World War is Arsenic and Vieilles Dentelles with Cary Grant. Capra revives there with the zany of his first burlesque works.
After the war, he created the company Liberty Films for which he directed La vie est belle, the story of a desperate man saved by his guardian angel. By the time of its release, this film will be a bitter commercial failure although it has now become very popular. Neither L'Enjeu (1948), dealing with the Republican Party, nor If we married papa (1951), foray into the musical, meet the success of his previous films shot in the 1930s. Frank Capra then disappears Hollywood and film sets. Between 1956 and 1958, however, he directed some scientific documentaries with an educational vocation, including Our Mr. Sun. He made his return to cinema in the early 1960s with A Hole in the Head, his first color film, and Billionaire pour un jour ( remakeof his Grande Dame d'un jour shot 28 years earlier) without, however, being successful. Resigned by these successive fiascos, the filmmaker decides to put an end to his career once and for all.
Frank Capra's work remains marked by his eternal optimism, his undeniable patriotism and his deeply human character. Despite critics who have often criticized him for giving in the "marshmallow", in other words in the excess of credulity, he remains one of the most adulated American directors in the whole world.
