Francesco Gabbani is an Italian singer representing Italy at Eurovision 2017.

Francesco Gabbani was born 09.09.1982 in the Italian town of Carrara, in the Tuscany region. The boy's family owned a musical instrument store, so the boy got acquainted with music in infancy.

As a child, Francesco mastered playing the drum kit, but soon the boy realized that he needed to master another instrument in order to compose his own songs. Gabbani chose the guitar, and at a young age he mastered the piano and bass guitar.

At the age of 18, Gabbani, a student at the classical lyceum in Carrara, became a member of the pop-rock group Trikobalto. The group also included drummer Matteo Zarkone and guitarist Nicolo Zarkone, Matteo's younger brother.

The history of the group can be called successful: the first album was perceived extremely positively, two singles were included in the rotation of the main music TV channels in Italy, the musicians were repeatedly invited to television programs, and in 2007 the trio took part in the Heineken Jammin 'Festival, the annual music festival in Venice.

In 2007 "Trikobalto" played the opening act for the famous band "Oasis" in Milan, and three years later the musicians opened the concert of the popular British rock band "Stereophonics" in Milan.

In 2010, the group "Trikobalto" released their second album, with which the musicians went on a tour of France. After the release of the video for the song "Preghiera Maledetta" in the spring of the same year, Gabbani left the band to pursue a solo career.

In 2011, Francesco released his debut singles Estate and Maledetto amore. The musician's first album, entitled "Greitist Iz", was released on May 27, 2014, peaking at # 59 on the Italian Album Chart.

In 2016, Gabbani, who signed a contract with the record company BMG Rights Management, won the 66th Festival di Sanremo song contest in the Novice group.

Surprisingly, the fate of the artist could have turned out differently: at one of the stages of the competition, Gabbani dropped out of the competition, losing to the singer Miele, but soon an error in the voting was revealed. The results of the repeated voting allowed the musician to advance to the next round, and then win a resounding victory.

Francesco's song "Amen" won the Mia Martini Critics' Award, the Sergio Bardotti Prize for Best Lyrics and the Emanuele Lazzati Prize. Subsequently, the song took 4th place in the Italian song chart, receiving warm public recognition.

On February 12, 2016, the artist released his second studio album "Eternamente ora", which peaked at # 18 on the Italian Album Chart. The album includes the song "Amen" and eight previously unreleased tracks.

In the same year, the musician wrote music for the Italian comedy Poor But Rich directed by Fausto Brizzi with Christian De Sica, Enrico Brignano, Lucia Ocone and Lodovic Comello in the lead roles. The world premiere of the film took place on December 15, 2016.

Also this year Francesco managed to work with other performers. In particular, together with the Italian composer Fabio Ilacqua Gabbani he wrote the song "L'amore sa" for the singer Francesco Renga.

In the autumn of the same year, together with the Italian composer and producer Celsus Valli, Francesco created the song "Il bambino col fucile" ("Child with a rifle"), which was included in the second joint studio album of actor and singer Adriano Celentano and performer Mina Mazzini.

In February 2017, Gabbani again became the winner of the San Remo Festival - this time, among experienced artists. Francesco became the first performer to receive the main award of the music festival two times in a row.

The source of inspiration for the song "Occidentali's Karma", with which Gabbani performed in the competition, was Desmond Morris's book "The Naked Monkey": the text ridicules and criticizes the obsession with progress, love for selfies and a total passion for oriental practices.

The song immediately became a hit number 1 in Italy, the song took 3rd place on the Malta chart, and 4th place on the Swiss chart. The song was also popular on iTunes in at least 15 European countries.

A funny, bright video for the song in a couple of months from the moment of its release scored almost 100 million views. For several weeks in a row, the video was in the top 100 most viewed music videos in the world on YouTube.

After the victory of the musician in San Remo, Gabbani received an offer to represent Italy at the Eurovision-2017 in Kiev. The song “Occidentali's Karma”, which has become so popular, was chosen for the competition - however, the song was reduced to 3 minutes and supplemented with an English fragment.

For the past five years, Gabbani has been dating tattoo artist Delilah Yardella. Like Francesco, Delilah was born and raised in Carrara. There are several large tattoos on the girl's body, but Gabbani has none yet.

According to the artist, the secret of their relationship is in strong quarrels and absolute fidelity: 

The singer admitted that at the beginning of their relationship he was extremely hot-tempered - during one quarrel, the musician even broke a guitar. But, according to Gabbani, now he has become much calmer.

Francesco has a bull terrier named Hector. Gabbani has a fondness for her pet, regularly shares photos of her pet on her Facebook page and talks about her dog solely as a family member.

In April 2017, Gabbani announced on social media that his third studio album, Magellano, would be released on April 28 this year. 

The album will include a song with which he will perform at Eurovision. From June 19 to September 9, 2017, Gabbani will hold several concerts in Italy in support of the album.
