Biography
Born of Turkish parents, Fatih Akin studied visual communication at the Beaux Arts in Hamburg in 1994. He began in cinema as an actor while seeking to get behind the camera, a chance that the production company Wueste Film offered him in hiring him in 1995. His first short films, Sensin - Du bist es! and Getuerkt, won numerous international awards and revealed precocious talent, which allowed him to move quickly to feature films with Kurz und Schmerlos (1998), where he was inspired by the style of Martin Scorsese to describe the universe of three little mafiosi, childhood friends in Hamburg. This film is also awarded, in Locarno in particular.
After Julie in July (2000), Fatih Akin, passionate about the theme of uprooting, takes an interest in the life of an Italian family in Germany in Solino (2002), then goes deeper into conflicting romantic relationships in the drama Head-on ( 2004), Golden Bear in Berlin, which brings him international recognition. After the documentary Crossing the bridge - the sound of Istanbul (2005), on the bubbling musical life of the Turkish capital, Fatih Akin confirms his status as a great hope of directing by signing the drama On the other side, history of crossed portraits between Germany and Turkey which won the Screenplay Prize at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival.
