Biography
Freddie Mercury is a British singer of Persian origin, leader and frontman of the rock group Queen, a legend of modern music and an idol of millions. On stage, he appeared as a charismatic and eccentric artist, but in real life he remained a shy guy who avoided talking to reporters. A Zoroastrian by religion, he created musical compositions, which he himself called "songs for entertainment and consumption in the modern spirit." Nevertheless, many of them were included in the "golden collection of rock".
fact
Childhood and youth
Farrukh Bulsara, whom everyone knows as the cult vocalist of the Queen band Freddie Mercury, was born in Tanzania in 1946. Parents Bomi and Jer were Parsis by nationality, an Iranian people professing the teachings of Zoroaster. 6 years after the appearance of a son in the Bulsar family, a daughter of Kashmir was born.

At that time, the family moved to India and stayed in Bombay. 6-year-old Farrukh was sent to school. The educational institution was located far from Bombay, in the city of Panchgani. The boy's grandfather and aunt lived there, with whom he stayed. At school, English-speaking classmates began to call Farrukh Freddie.
Freddie was a diligent student. He quickly became interested in sports, choosing for himself hockey, tennis and boxing. The boy also became interested in music and painting. He drew well, distributing drawings to all his friends and relatives. But Farrukh loved to sing most of all. Classes in the school choir took a lot of his time.
The school director drew attention to the excellent vocals of the student. He invited the boy's parents to develop his abilities in piano courses, promising to petition for a small price. Thus, Freddie Mercury began to attend music lessons. Upon completion, he was awarded as the best student.

At the age of 12, Freddie, together with his friends, organized a rock group, calling it "The Hectics". The guys played and sang at school discos and wherever they were received.
In 1962, the future Queen leader, who turned 16, graduated from high school in India and returned to Zanzibar, where his parents moved again. After 2 years, the power on the island changed: Zanzibar declared its independence from England, riots began. Bulsar's family moved to London.
In his youth, the guy becomes a student at the prestigious Ealing College, where he studies painting and design, and also continues to study music and ballet dancing. Mercury calls Jimi Hendrix and Rudolf Nureyev his idols.

Music
While studying at Ealing, Freddie left his parents' house and rented an apartment in the Kensington area, in which London's bohemians settled. Bulsara rented accommodation with his friend and musician Chris Smith. During this time, Freddie also met his college colleague Tim Staffel. Tim was the leader of the music group "Smile". Soon, Freddie began attending rehearsals of the band, where he met all the musicians. He became especially close to drummer Roger Taylor, to whom he soon moved.

After graduating from college in 1969, 23-year-old Freddie earned his diploma in graphic design. He painted a lot. Together with Taylor, he opened a small store where, among other goods, Bulsar's works were sold. In the same year, Freddie met the musicians of the Ibex group from Liverpool. In a few days he knew the whole Ibex repertoire and even added some of his songs.
After the breakup of Ibex, Freddie, who could not imagine his future life without music, found a new group with the help of a newspaper advertisement. It was called the "Sour Milk Sea". The newcomer was accepted as soon as they saw and heard what he was capable of. Freddie moved beautifully, had a toned figure (with a height of 177 cm, the guy's weight was 74 kg), and his 4-octave voice did not leave anyone indifferent.

After one of the musicians left, the group broke up. But in its place a new one was born, which received the name "Queen". It consisted of the guys from the two previous groups. In 1971, Queen's line-up became permanent after a number of changes. Freddie painted the band's coat of arms with the letter Q in the center and the zodiac signs of the musicians around. In 1972, when the band was recording their debut album, Freddie changed his surname Bulsar, taking on the creative pseudonym of Mercury.
Soon, a song by Freddie Mercury called "Seven Seas of Rhye" hit the UK charts. A year later, in 1974, Queen's first hit appeared - the composition Killer Queen. The most successful song "Bohemian Rhapsody" followed immediately after.
Due to the complex form of the musical composition, its recording lasted more than three weeks, and the label executives categorically did not want to release the 5-minute track as a single. But thanks to actor and radio presenter Kenny Everett, the song still sounded on the radio, after which a real boom began among fans of rock music, and the disc went on sale. The song stayed at the top of the charts for 9 weeks. The first clip in history was filmed for her.
Later, Bohemian Rhapsody was named the best song of the millennium by The Official Charts Company. The second hit "We Are The Champions" becomes the unofficial anthem of the champions of sports competitions and Olympiads.
In 1975 the group toured Japan. These were not the first foreign tours of Queen, by that time the musicians had already performed in the USA. But such a resounding success happened for the first time. The musicians felt like stars. It was then that Freddie Mercury fell in love with the land of the rising sun and began collecting Japanese art.
In October 1979, the dream of a musician from Zanzibar came true: with his hits "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Crazy Little Thing Called Love", Mercury performed with the Royal Ballet.
Over the years, the musician's repertoire has been enriched with songs from the albums of the group "A Day at the Races", "News of the World" and the scandalous "Jazz". In 1980, Mercury changed his image. He has a short haircut, the artist has grown a mustache. The music began to trace the features of the disco-funk style. The leader of the group pleases fans with the duet "Under Pressure", which he performed with David Bowie, and later - the new hit "Radio Ga Ga".
In 1982, the band announced a break from their touring schedule for a year. Mercury took advantage of the respite and recorded his first solo album in Munich. In May of the following year, the musician met Montserrat Caballe.

July 13, 1985 can be considered the peak of the musical career of Mercury and Queen. The group took part in a grand show at Wembley Stadium, where, in addition to them, Elton John, Paul McCartney, David Bowie, Sting and other stars sang. But it was Mercury's performance that was unanimously recognized as the main and highlight of the program. The 75,000-strong crowd during Queen's performance experienced real euphoria. It was after this concert that Freddie became a rock legend.
A year later, the band made their last tour called "Magic Tour". Within its framework, the last concerts took place together with Freddie Mercury. This time, 120 thousand fans gathered at Wembley Stadium. The concert was later released as Queen at Wembley. The tour ended in Knebworth. Mercury did not perform with the group again.
In the spring of 1987, Freddie and Montserrat Caballe began work on a joint album called Barcelona, which was released in October 1988. At the same time, a joint concert of the singer and the opera diva took place in Barcelona. This was the last performance of the legend.
The farewell song, which the king of rock recorded in the last days of his life, was the musical composition "Mother love". The singer felt that he was fading away, so he used a drum machine to work. The last verse was sung for a friend by his colleague Brian May. The song was included in the group's album "Made in Heaven", which was released in 1995.

Personal life
Freddie Mercury met the closest person in his life Mary Austin in 1969. After several years of living together, they broke up: Freddie admitted that he is bisexual. But the friendship and close relationship between the couple remained until Mercury's death. Austin was his personal secretary. He dedicated the song "Love of My Life" to her. It was Mary the musician who inherited a house in London and most of the fortune. He was the godfather of her eldest son, Richard.
Later, Mercury had a short affair with actress Barbara Valentine. As some researchers of the life and work of the musician assure, he suffered from the fact that he could not create a family. In his personal life, the artist felt lonely. In addition, according to the tradition existing among the Parsis, an adult man without a wife and children was considered a great sinner. The artist respected the traditions of his ancestors. In his youth, he attended the temple of fire worshipers. There, the sacrament of initiation into the Zoroastrian faith was performed over Freddie.

After Freddie's death, talk about his orientation did not stop. There were interviews of friends in which they confirmed that the musician was gay. This was announced by Brian May and Roger Taylor, who knew Mercury closely.
George Michael spoke about the singer's bisexuality, and Freddie's personal assistant Peter Freestone published a memoir in which he mentioned several men with whom the musician had close relationships. Jim Hutton told about his 6-year relationship with the legend in his book "Mercury and Me".
fact
Sickness and death
Rumors about Freddie Mercury's illness appeared back in 1986. Information that the singer passed an HIV test was leaked to the press. In 1989, the alarming rumors, which Mercury himself denied to the last, were confirmed: Freddie had lost a lot of weight. His haggard appearance served as the most convincing proof of the terrible illness.

During this period, Mercury worked hard, realizing that much needed to be done. He recorded songs for the next two albums: "The Miracle" (1989) and "Innuendo" (1991). The clips for the latter are black and white. This was the only way to disguise Freddie's changed appearance. Nevertheless, the artist continued to create masterpieces. Mercury's hit "The Show Must Go On", which was included in the last album, was later included in the "100 best songs of the XX century."
On November 23, 1991, an official statement by Mercury appeared that he was sick with AIDS. The next day, November 24, Freddie was gone. Bronchial pneumonia was the official cause of death.
His funeral took place according to the Zoroastrian rite, his relatives retreated in one thing: the body was cremated. Only relatives were present at the funeral. Only the family and friend of Mary Austin knew where Mercury's ashes were buried. In 2013, fans found a burial site: this is the Kensal Green cemetery in west London.
In memory of the rock legend, the documentary Freddie Mercury: The Great Pretender was released in 2012. This was the name of the star after his brilliant performance of a cover version of the popular song of the 50s "The Great Pretender". Writers Matt Richards and Mark Langthorn published their memoirs The Show Must Go On. Life, Death and Legacy of Freddie Mercury ”, which described the biography of the idol of millions, presented detailed interviews of his colleagues, relatives, as well as little-known photos of the artist and his loved ones.
In 2018, the drama Bohemian Rhapsody, dedicated to the life story of the lead singer of the Queen group, was released. The film received many rave reviews as well as several prestigious awards. The leading actor, Egyptian-born Hollywood artist Rami Malek, won 4 awards at once in the Best Actor nomination, including Golden Globe, BAFTA and Oscars.
