However, this sport did not captivate the future Olympic champion - he longed for figure skating.

As a result, the boy returned to the ice, but by that time he was already 9 years old, and Zhenya's level of training was much lower than that of his peers. The 9-year-olds have already done double jumps, but he was not given such elements. It was then that he decided to go into ice dancing - they seemed technically easier.

The first coach of the novice skater was Boris Alekseevich Rublev, and the first partner was Elena Krykanova, who at that time was considered the leader in her age group. Therefore, at first, it was not easy for Zhenya - the level of the talented skater was much higher. However, he soon caught up with his partner and, together with Elena, won gold medals three times at the World Junior Championships.

In the "adult" group, Eugene, however, moved with a new partner Larisa Fedorinova. With her, the successes were not so outstanding - at the USSR championships, the guys did not rise above 4th place.

In 1989, a turning point happened in the young man's sports biography - he was paired with Oksana Grischuk. Working with the girl was not easy, she was distinguished by colossal hard work and a complex character. However, the pair's success was undeniable, and young skaters began to prepare for the 1994 Olympics in Lillehammer.

At first, their coach was Natalya Dubova, but shortly before the competition, Evgeny and Oksana switched to Natalya Linchuk. Moreover, the initial reason for this rearrangement was the conflict between Oksana and Natalya - the coach eventually kicked the skater out of the team.

Eugene hesitated for some time and even paired up with Tatyana Navka, but then, under the pressure of his former partner, he came to his senses and again began to skate with Oksana. Under Lynchuk's leadership, the athletes had to change both the music and the program, but the difficulties of preparation paid off - the fiery "Rock Around the Clock" brought Olympic gold to the skaters.

It was more difficult to prepare for the next Olympics, and as a result, Oksana and Yevgeny changed their coaches again - after Natalia Lynchuk, Tatyana Tarasova began working with them, giving the world more than one Olympic champion. Success again awaited the athletes, although the preparation pretty ruffled their nerves. In 1998, in Nagano, the Platov-Grischuk pair won gold medals for the second time. By the way, no one before them became two-time Olympic winners in ice dancing.

After that, the duo broke up. Eugene, leaving amateur skating, switched to professional sports, and Oksana, who by that time had become Pasha Grischuk, went to conquer Hollywood. The skater's new partner was Maya Usova, also a two-time Olympic medalist - the girl had silver and bronze medals on her account. Together with her, Eugene visited all 3 steps of the podium of the World Championship in figure skating among professionals. In the 1998/1999 season, the couple took gold, the next year - silver, and then - bronze.

After that, Eugene plunged into coaching. For 3 years he assisted Tatyana Tarasova in the USA, worked with Shizuka Arakawa and Sasha Cohen.
