Ernest Borgnine

Originally from Italy, Ernest Borgnine is not particularly intended for comedy. At 18, he joined the Navy until 1945. It was not until the end of the war that he enrolled at the Randall School of Drama in Hartford. He made his Broadway stage debut four years later in the play Harvey. In 1951, Borgnine moved to Los Angeles: he landed small roles thanks to the films Whistle at Easton Falls, by Robert Siodmak and China Corsair by Ray Nazarro. It was in 1953 that he played a major character for the first time, in the multi-Oscar-winning film As long as there will be men, where he is the violent and cruel sergeant "Fatso". He then gives his full potential in A Man Is Past (1954), Vera Cruz (1954) or Johnny Guitar (1954), three films which impose him as one of the "bad guys" of Hollywood.

Sometimes earthy, sometimes disturbing, Borgnine finds his personal consecration by playing Marty (1955), for which he won the Oscar for best actor, which allows him to approach a new facet of his work as an actor: he finds the role of a shy and tender butcher. A true workaholic (nearly three films a year), he goes on to perform roles and in spite of himself, finds his typical job of "tough", badly licked and violent bear, especially in Quand le bugon sonnera (1955) or Les Vikings (1958). He also collected a best actor award at the Locarno International Film Festival for The Rabbit trap (1959) by Philip Leacock.

Despite these successes, he continues his guest appearancesin more or less good films. He left for Europe and in particular in his country of origin to shoot, among other things, the comedy The Last Judgment by Vittorio De Sica, for which he played a pickpocket. Robert Aldrich gives him a role in The Flight of the Phoenix (1965), then hires him to don the costume of the tasty general of the Twelve Bitches (1967). Borgnine is also engaged in The Wild Horde (1969) by Sam Peckinpah, alongside William Holden. At the same time, the actor is busy managing as best he can the crew of the series Sur le Pont, la Marine !, in which he will play from 1962 to 1966 for a total of 138 episodes!

The duality of Borgnine is to be a tender trapped in the face of a mobster. His roles are imbued with this duality when he alternates the low-level bandit of A Colt for three bastards (1971), with The Prince and the Poor (1977), a film for the whole family. Aldrich once again trusts him, but still as a villain, to face Lee Marvin in The Emperor of the North (1973). He is also the leader of a satanic sect in La Pluie du diable (1975). Some films are rushed in and his appearances are shot just as quickly. But there is always this desire to show "something else" in Borgnine, which pushes him in particular to accept a role of journalist for The Black Hole (1979), a science fiction film nominated at the Oscars for its special effects.

In the 1980s, Borgnine's career faltered. For a New York 1997 (1981), by John Carpenter, how many Days of the End of the World (1980), Farm of Terror (1981) or Skeleton Coast (1987)? If the actor always gives it to their heart's content, he seems to follow the films with total indifference. He also plays in several TV films, including Les Douze Salopards 2 (1985) with Telly Savalas. He was still attracted to television when he played for four years the manager of a helicopter company, Santini Air , specializing in stunts from Hollywood films in Supercopter.

It's bad movie time again for Borgnine who plays small roles: a doctor for Tides of War (1990), a grandfather in The New Adventures of Merlin the Enchanter (1996), a benevolent producer in BASEketball (1998). In this decade, it is especially Bienvenue à Gattaca (1997) that deserves mention. He then (successfully) tried his hand at dubbing in Charlie 2 (1996) or Small Soldiers (1998).

Since 1999, he has been lending his voice to SpongeBob's aging man-siren. He produced and played FBI chief Edgar Hoover in 2000. From judges to grandfathers (but not sweet!), Borgnine continued to play, stainless. In 2004, he was a Rolling star in the comic book inspired film Blueberry. Far from the bloodthirsty characters who made him famous, he embodies a sweet and dreamy old man. He participated in the last episode of the series Urgences, which earned him an Emmy nomination for best guest appearance .
