After studying film at Hunter College in Manhattan where he learned screenwriting, Edward Burns began by directing a few short films. In 1995, he founded with his brother Brian the company Irish Twin Productions which allowed him to make his first feature film, Les Freres McMullen. An independent production immediately crowned with success, since it won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Festival.

After a thunderous debut, Edward Burns continued in the path of independent film depicting the romantic relationships of young adults. Thus, he writes, directs and produces in 1996 Small Lies between brothers, with Cameron Diaz and Jennifer Aniston, then takes again these same functions two years later with Quitte ou double, in which appears Lauren Holly. In 2001, he wrote Rencontres à Manhattan, a film whose universe recalls, even more than in his previous works, the universe of Woody Allen, one of his idols.

Alongside his duties as director, screenwriter and producer, Edward Burns also distinguished himself as an actor. If he still holds one of the main roles of his own films, the New Yorker also works for and with the greatest. In 1998, he was one of the soldiers in Saving Private Ryan, Steven Spielberg's cult war film, then starred, three years later, in 15 Minutes, a thriller in which he played alongside Robert De Niro.
