The permanent leader of the "Picnic" group has an unusual name. But the work of Edmund Shklyarsky cannot be called ordinary either. His voice is booming and magnetized, songs are full of bizarre images and intricate names, and his paintings recall the strange worlds of Hieronymus Bosch. Hiding behind dark glasses, the musician seems impenetrable and for many years has been creating mysteries of light and sound on the stage, radiating like a medieval carnival.

Edmund Mechislavovich Shklyarsky was born in 1955 in Leningrad. The musician is half Pole by nationality, so from an early age he speaks Russian and Polish fluently. The boy was always receptive to music and started playing instruments early.

This is not surprising, since the mother of the future singer taught a general piano course at the conservatory. Edmund initially took up the keys and then switched to the violin, but his academic career did not work out, as the child's mind was taken over by Western rock stars.

It was the recordings of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones that made the boy pick up the guitar. However, he did not think seriously about the career of a musician, and after graduating from school he chose a solid profession - he went to study energy engineering at the Leningrad Polytechnic.

Apparently, the influence of his father, a mining engineer, who earned the USSR State Prize, affected this. At the same time, the guy did not leave his music lessons and even founded the student collective "Surprise", which declared itself at the "Spring Rhythms" festival, having received a special prize.

In his youth, Edmund auditioned as a guitarist in the beginning Leningrad group Aquarium, played keyboards in Orion and was a member of the Labyrinth ensemble. However, Shklyarsky quickly realized that he needed freedom of expression. Acquaintances in music circles and membership in the Leningrad Rock Club made it easier to find like-minded people to create their own band. This is how the outlines of an island called "Picnic" appeared on the map of Russian rock.

The debut performance of "Picnic" took place in 1981, and a year later the musicians recorded the first disc "Smoke", where Alexey Dobychin was the co-author of Shklyarsky. In the future, Edmund Mechislavovich will become the undisputed leader, being the author of music and lyrics for all subsequent albums. And there are more than 2 dozen of them in the discography of the collective.

Having started performing in the Leningrad rock club, the group quickly entered its front ranks, becoming in 1983 the laureate of the 1st festival along with “Aquarium” and “Zoo”. The ensemble gives its first concerts, and even then an unusual performance appears on the stage, which over time will become an obligatory attribute of all performances. Today it is impossible to imagine the "Picnic" show without the amazing instruments designed by the soloist, lighting effects and mummers who take the stage on two-meter stilts.

By the early 1990s, the team was recording 5 albums, including “Hieroglyph”, “Come from Nowhere” and “Harakiri”. By this time, the concerts of the group are sold out, and each subsequent disc becomes an event. In the stream of Russian rock “Picnic” stands apart, reminding no one and not imitating anyone. The impassive frontman sings in a droning tenor about strange worlds without touching on the social and political issues that worry most in this troubled era.

In 2001, the album "Egyptian" was released, songs from which entered the charts of "Our Radio", which gained popularity throughout the country. Since then, Shklyarsky and his team have become a regular guest of the Nashestvie rock festival. In 2005, the disc “Kingdom of Curves” was released, the title track of which became the soundtrack to the series of the same name, and the composition “The Shaman has Three Hands” repeatedly entered the “Chart Dozen” of “Nashe Radio”.

During the same period, the musician took part in the voice acting of Tim Burton's cartoon "The Nightmare Before Christmas", singing the part of vampires. The choice of heroes turned out to be predictable, since the vampire theme often surfaced in the poet's work and even earlier resulted in a full-fledged album. In the 2010s, the performer continues to write songs, perform and record discs, including "Iron Mantras", "Obscurantism and Jazz", "Stranger". In 2017, "Picnic" celebrated its 35th anniversary with a series of jubilee concerts across the country.

Edmund fell in love with drawing as a child and over the years did not abandon this hobby. The ability to embody images not only in words, but also on paper has led to the fact that almost all the covers of "Picnic" are illustrated by the author of texts and music. The characters in Shklyarsky's paintings often hide behind masks, and in the curved and deformed silhouettes one can read an attempt to escape reality or, conversely, to get into an inaccessible space.

The artist's painting is full of abstractions, symbolism, and seems to follow from his poetry and complement it. It is easy to imagine that the drawings depict zurgs and lurgs, dolls with a human face, three-armed shamans and other characters in the lyrics. Personal exhibitions of Shklyarsky's works are periodically opened. In 2005, the musician's paintings were exhibited in the Manege of St. Petersburg, and in 2009, the NOTA-R publishing house released the book-album Sounds and Symbols, where the paintings are accompanied by the author's commentary.

The musician's personal life was formed in his youth. In an interview, he said that he fell in love with Elena while dancing on New Year's Eve. They got married in a restaurant on Nevsky Prospekt, where they celebrated their silver wedding 25 years later. Edmund's wife gave birth to two children - daughter Alina (1984) and son Stanislav (1986).

The Shklyarsky family lives in St. Petersburg. The son became interested in music and over time played a synthesizer in his father's group, becoming the youngest participant in "Picnic". Alina also does not stay away from creativity and sometimes helps her dad in writing texts.

Now Edmund Mechislavovich is already twice a grandfather. The man practices yoga, loves reading books on philosophy and playing chess, retaining an addiction to this game since childhood.

By religion, Shklyarsky is a Catholic and attaches great importance to faith, like the Orthodox “brother” Ivan Okhlobystin, whose outward resemblance makes him ascribe a non-existent relationship to men. The artists do have similarities in appearance and physique, being similar in height and weight. The musician with the "Picnic" group regularly conducts tours across Russia, without taking long pauses in concert activities. Every couple of years the band releases a new album, and the latter presents it to loyal fans, whose number does not diminish. The last disc "Sparks and Cancan" appeared in 2017 and consisted of 10 fresh tracks.

In March 2018, during a tour, on the way to Ryazan, a minibus with the Picnic musicians got into an accident. The state of health of Shklyarsky after the accident was assessed as satisfactory, although he received a head injury and a fracture of the pelvic bone. Over time, the artists continued to tour.
