Dmitry Mikhailovich Gnatyuk was born on March 28, 1925 in the Romanian village of Staroselie. His parents were simple peasants Maria Ivanovna and Mikhail Dmitrievich, and his father was a veteran of the First World War and spent his whole life with a wooden prosthesis instead of a leg.
