After a passage through comedy, notably in Cold Water by Olivier Assayas, Djamel Bensalah turns to directing. In 1996, he directed his first short There's the foutage in the air with Jamel Debbouze and Julien Courbey in the lead roles, before designing for Canal + a few spots advertising and short programs.

In 1998, his friends Jamel Debbouze, Julien Courbey and Lorant Deutsch embarked on the adventure for his first feature film entitled Le Ciel, les oiseaux et ... ta mère !. While it had taken more than two years to set up his first short with a budget of 100,000 francs, Djamel only needed 6 months of procedures to finance this project.

Building on this success, the filmmaker enlisted the services of confirmed actors (Roschdy Zem, Hélène De Fougerolles, Josiane Balasko and Gérard Jugnot) for his second comedy, Le Raid (2002), a journey of a band of nickel-plated feet. across the world which unfortunately does not convince the critics. Three years later, Djamel Bensalah returns to his roots for his third film, Once Upon a Time in the Oued, in which Julien Courbey tries to make a career as a grocer in Algeria.

In 2007, he returned with Big City, written with Gilles Laurent, his lifelong friend and accomplice, already a screenwriter on his previous films. In this children's film not just for children, Djamel Bensalah returns once again to his favorite themes, namely the problems of racism and the organization of the city. At the same time, he made two of his dreams come true: making a western and filming with Eddy Mitchell. On the set of the film, he began to write the dialogues for the comedy Neuilly sa mère! that he does not realize but that he produces and which attracts more than 2 million French in theaters. Two years later, he made his comeback behind the camera for the needs of Beur sur la ville, a crazy comedy on the police environment with the comic Booder as the headliner.
