At competitions, the boy lacked stability: he thwarted triple jumps, and the weight gain even called into question the prospects for a sports career. The young man even wanted to quit training, although it was a pity for the effort. He moved to the children's hockey and figure skating center near Moscow in Odintsovo. Then it was decided to transfer him to doubles.

Here Khodykina found the first partner Maria Bogoslavskaya, with whom he skated for the 2015/2016 season. However, the couple did not achieve success, and Masha began to look for a replacement. The choice fell on the former single skater Daria Pavlyuchenko, who, although she had 8 years of skating experience, had already managed to leave the ice and calmly went to a secondary school for a year, not thinking about a sports career.

Dasha was returned to figure skating and paired with Denis on the ice. So in the summer of 2016, their joint path to sports heights began. Sergei Dobroskokov began to train the skaters. The leader in the pair was Khodykin, who has a strong jumping technique. Dasha was inferior to her partner in technical skills, but the young athlete was motivated and persistent: she was ready to spend all her free hours and even weekends at the rink.

Despite the fact that training took a central place in Denis's life, he decided to take care of the future in advance, and therefore, after graduating from school, he entered the institute, choosing management in the sports industry as a specialization. Since then, the young man has to combine training and competitive processes with tests and exams. The guy assumes that in the future he will lead a sports club.

There are rumors that Khodykin is dating the skater Betina Popova, but Denis does not speak out on this matter. In an interview, he admitted that he was friends with Betina, as well as with Elizaveta Tuktamysheva, but whether there is a place for romance in this communication remains questionable.

Having started skating with Daria Pavlyuchenko in the summer of 2016, Denis quickly brought his sports biography to a new level. A year later, the couple became part of the junior national team of Russia, began to show results at the local and international levels.

Khodykin calls his path in figure skating special and says that he is in no hurry. The European Championship has become a holiday for Russian fans. The medal harvest was so plentiful that individual successes could be ignored. However, for Denis and his partner, performing at the continental championship was a personal achievement.

Having skated the short program by 74.92 points, the skaters took 2nd position, but the free program put everything in its place, and Pavlyuchenko and Khodykin eventually took bronze, losing to compatriots Alexandra Boykova and Dmitry Kozlovsky and Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov. The couple performed demonstration performances under “Peer Gynt” by Edvard Grieg.
