Def Leppard is an English rock band formed in 1977 at the height of the British heavy metal movement. Having won the hearts of the public in the early 1980s, the band released dozens of albums and compilations and became one of the best-selling projects in the world, being included in the list of "100 Greatest Artists of All Time".

In 1977, in the British city of Sheffield, three students from Tapton High School formed a group called Atomic Mass. Pete Willis played guitar, Rick Savage played bass, and Tony Kenning played drums. Soon they were joined by a student of a nearby academy, Joe Elliot, whose vocals fit perfectly into the instrumental compositions of the young musicians.

The new soloist invited his colleagues to change the name to Def Leppard and drew the logo of the renamed project. The idea was accepted unanimously, and the beginning quartet began rehearsals. The musicians gathered in a small room at a local factory. At this time, the group added new guitarist Steve Clarke, who organized Def Leppard's first public performance at Westfield School.

In 1978, Tony Kenning left the band for a new project, this happened during the recording of their debut album, which consisted of 3 songs. His parts were performed by Frank Noon, who was soon replaced by the young and talented Rick Allen, who became the permanent drummer of Def Leppard. In late 1984 he was in a car accident and lost his left arm. During the period of work on the 5th studio album, the musicians suspended him from participating in the recording for six months, and in 1991 Clarke died of an overdose in his own home in London. The group did not look for a new guitarist and continued to work with the four of them.

However, the signature style and sound of "Def Leppard" demanded bright and powerful guitar riffs, and the musicians arranged a casting in place of the deceased Clark. After a series of auditions, they opted for ex-Dio and Whitesnake guitarist Vivian Campbell.

Not the last role in the history of the creation of Def Leppard was played by the producer of the Australian group AC / DC Matt Lang, who shaped the musical taste of the group and helped in the recording of some albums.

Their debut album, Def Leppard EP, was released in 1979 by Bludgeon Riffola Records. After returning from the tour, Def Leppard began recording a new album called "Pyromania", which became famous thanks to the single "Photograph". The record sales were fantastic, and the video for the title track became one of the most requested videos on MTV. Another famous video was "Too Late for Love", filmed after hanging out with Elton John and Meat Loaf.

In 1983 the musicians embarked on an American tour in support of Pyromania, which was held with tremendous fan support. The last performance in California, at the San Diego stadium, was attended by 55 thousand people.

In 1987, Def Leppard released the album "Hysteria", which had been in the works for 4 years. The name of the disc was invented by drummer Rick Allen, who lost his arm in a car accident, it reflected his own emotions and the state of the group during the period of creative uncertainty, which coincided with the recording of the disc.

The triumphant procession of "Hysteria" began with the single "Animal", which became the first composition of the group to enter the top 10 of the British charts. The album itself skyrocketed to the top and remained at the top for 105 weeks. Other tracks, "Pour Some Sugar on Me" and "Love Bites", conquered the American audience and for some time led the Billboard Hot 100, and videos for these songs took first places on music channels.

The commercial success of "Hysteria" surpassed the wildest expectations, with worldwide sales of 20 million copies. Def Leppard was at the height of popularity, in 1988 they were nominated for the British Phonogram Association Award and included in the list of musicians who performed "100 Greatest Songs of the 1980s".

Wasting no time, the team began working on their next studio album, "Adrenalize", which was released on March 31, 1992. The new album solidified the group's leading positions in the UK and US charts, and the first single, entitled "Let's Get Rocked", became an unrivaled hit that Def Leppard performed at the MTV Awards.

In the same year, the team took part in a concert dedicated to the memory of the great Freddie Mercury at Wembley Stadium in London. They sang their own compositions and Queen's song "Now i'm Here" with guitar accompaniment by Brian May.

In early 1992, trends in modern rock music forced Def Leppard to abandon the rebellious image and add a pop accent to their own tunes. In 1993 the band released "Retro Active", a collection of unknown compositions written over the previous decade.

Two years later, some of these songs entered the Def Leppard Greatest Hits (1980-1995) collection, which peaked at # 3 in the UK and sold 5 million copies in the US. In parallel, alternative tracklists were created and distributed in North America and Japan. In the fall of 1995, Def Leppard's musicians entered the Guinness Book of Records, having played 3 concerts in 1 day on 3 continents.

Album "Slang", released in 1996, looked rather modest against the background of previous successes, but did not go unnoticed. The record turned out to be alive, because, experimenting with sound, the musicians recorded each composition together, and did not mix the parts of individual instruments. The lyrical compositions prevailing in "Slang" were atypical for Def Leppard, attendance declined and sales dropped.

The musicians needed a boost, which was the band's participation in the video project "Behind the Music". The documentary brought Def Leppard back into the public eye with multiple replays and parodies produced by Saturday Night Live.

Feeling a second wind, the band released an album in the traditional style of "Def Leppard". "Euphoria" received gold certificates in the USA and Canada, and the first single "Promises" hit the top of the American rock charts and held the leading position for 3 weeks.

In the wake of the revived public interest in Def Leppard, in 2001, the music channel VH1 released a biography film entitled "Hysteria - The Def Leppard Story", which has been repeatedly reissued on DVD. In 2002, the musicians created the album "X", filled with songs in the style of pop-rock. The new work failed in the British and American charts, but the world tour in support of the record attracted an audience of thousands, who attended 151 concerts.
