Biography

Son of a pianist and a journalist writer, the young David Cronenberg dreams of becoming a novelist. A student of literature at the University of Toronto, he nevertheless decided to turn to the seventh art. Evolving in the underground art scene of Toronto, he was influenced by the wave of New York experimental cinema, but also by writers like Vladimir Nabokov. It was at this time that he witnessed his father's slow illness, an event whose imprint is felt throughout his career as a filmmaker. From the end of the 1960s, he signed for two short films, Transfer and From the Drain, then for his first two features, Stereo (1969) and Crimes of the future (1970). Sexuality, the body as a field of experimentation, medicine and psychoanalysis:

After working for television in the 1970s, he directed Frissons (1975), Rage (1977) and Chromosome 3 (1979). These three feature films, between horror and science fiction, divide critics, but allow David Cronenberg to acquire the status of cult filmmaker. With Chromosome 3, the filmmaker confirms his inclination for the study of the human brain, featuring a woman whose death impulses are materialized by monsters. He thus demonstrates that a horror film can bring a successful reflection on social problems such as depression. From her debut behind the camera, her sister Denise Cronenberg has been involved in all her projects as a costume designer.

In 1981, he had his first commercial success thanks to Scanners and his mutant telepaths. More than a trashy science fiction film, this one offers a critical approach to human nature. Two years later, he called on James Woods for Videodrome. Confirming his singularity, he stages his conception of the power - alienating - of the media and communication tools. An important step in his filmography, we can already feel his interest in mechanical-organic contamination (long before Crash and eXistenZ). He then gets down to the adaptation of a Stephen King novel, Dead Zone with Christopher Walken. Here again, it is through contact with the machine (car accident) that the hero acquires his power.

David Cronenberg achieved international recognition with La Mouche (1986), performed by Jeff Goldblum. This is the remake of The Black Fly, a classic from the 1950s. But this account of the metamorphosis of a biologist into an insect is one of his most famous films. The director draws a play from it in 2008, performed at the Théâtre du Châtelet. If he moves further and further away from horror cinema and its traditional imagery, it continues to destabilize viewers, while its rating with critics continues to climb.

In Faux-Semblants (1989), he evokes the fusional and destructive relationship between two twins, played by Jeremy Irons, whom he finds on the set of M. Butterfly in 1993. In 1991, he manages to bring to the screen the labyrinthine The Naked Feast by William Burroughs, where many directors have failed. Since the mid-1980s, Cronenberg has not hesitated to drop the director's costume to put on that of the actor. We see him in small roles in his own films (La Mouche, Faux-Semblants), but also in John Landis, Clive Barker, Gus Van Sant, as well as in Z series and series like Alias. The opportunity, very often, to indulge in self-parody.

In 1996, David Cronenberg tackled the. With this eponymous film, Crash, which won the Special Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, he signed his most personal but also the most controversial work. For James Spader and Rosanna Arquette, in the casting, the fascination for pilots tends to replace their taste for the sexual act. Once again, Cronenberg underlines the disturbing relationship that humans have with machines in the contemporary world.

The metaphor of human-technology relations continued in 1999 with eXistenZ. Jude Law is grappling with a strange universe whose borders are lost between the real world and the virtual world. In 2001, moving away from his reflections on being through the prism of the modern world, he staged Ralph Fiennes, lost in the limbo of his consciousness in Spider. A pivotal work, he resumes his journey to the heart of the human brain, insinuating himself like a spider on a web. The formal mastery is striking.

In an ever more "realistic" register, he created A history of violence (2005). A dizzying reflection on Evil devoid of all Manichaeism and inspired by a graphic novel. Viggo Mortensen plays there a man tortured by his past draped under the veil of the exemplary father. An actor whom he found two years later in The Promises of the Shadows (2007), the first feature film that Cronenberg shot entirely outside his native Canada. If these two films seem to deviate from his original obsessions, it is in reality only in appearance. The mechanical and visceral dimension indeed remains underlying in each of them.

His enthusiasm for psychoanalysis emerges again in 2011 with A Dangerous Method. No longer approached filigree as usual, this time the discipline is treated head-on. In the role of Sigmund Freud, the director calls on Viggo Mortensen for their third collaboration. Michael Fassbender wears the habit of practitioner Carl Gustav Jung. His patient, the hysterical Sabrina Spielrein, is played by Keira Knightley. Barely five months after this film, David Cronenberg presents the intriguing and violent Cosmopolis, in competition at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, in which he directs for the first time the young hero of the Twilight saga, Robert Pattinson, but also the French Juliette Binoche and Mathieu Amalric.
