David Ayer likes urban atmospheres and being in the heart of the action. As a teenager, young David arrives in Los Angeles with his family. They settle in a notorious part of town, in South Central. It is in this district that David will frequent the dregs of humanity, in particular by observing the corruption reigning within the police force. These experiences become a source of inspiration for the filmmaker.


Indeed, at the age of 18, Ayer enlisted in the navy as a sonar officer in a military submarine. From this stint in the army, the director draws the script for the film U-571, directed by Jonathan Mostow in 2000. David Ayer decides to embark on a career as a screenwriter immediately after leaving the army. It was at the instigation of his friend, screenwriter and mentor Wesley Strick (Les Nerfs à vive, Wolf ...), that David broke through Hollywood.


After the successful U-571 which relaunches the submarine film genre by focusing on the scary camera, Ayer signs the script for the very violent and ultra-realistic Training Day directed by Antoine Fuqua in 2001. With this film, the filmmaker immerses the audience in the heart of the Los Angeles police force by following the daily life of an idealistic young cop (Ethan Hawke) grappling with his brutal and corrupt teammate (Denzel Washington, masterful, receives the Oscar for best actor for this role). The same year, Ayer completely changes register but remains in the urban universe by signing the scenario of Fast & Furious of Rob Cohen. The film met with phenomenal success, made Vin Diesel a star, and ended up establishing Ayer's reputation in Hollywood.


In 2003, David Ayer continued in the action flick Brawn by writing Clark Johnson's elite unit SWAT script, starring Samuel L. Jackson and Colin Farrell. The feature film does not cut corners and fulfills its entertainment contract. The same year, Ayer got down to a more serious project: the adaptation of James Ellroy's novel, Dark Blue. The film is directed by Ron Shelton and played by Kurt Russell and Ving Rhames. This feature film is set in a very realistic context, again within a corrupt police force; in fact, the action takes place during the Los Angeles riots of 1992, after the tragic Rodney King affair.


David Ayer moved on to directing in 2005 while filming Bad Times with Christian Bale. This film is also directly inspired by the youth of the filmmaker in the red light districts of South Central. We follow the descent of an army veteran who became an agent of the territory security in the lowlands of LA, between corruption and violence. The director continued to direct in 2008 by signing At the end of the night with Keanu Reeves and Forest Whitaker. Set again in Los Angeles, the film follows a young cop wrongly accused of murder, who must struggle alone in a corrupt environment. Note that the screenplay is signed by novelist James Ellroy, who is collaborating for the second time with Ayer after Dark Blue. The feature film is intended to be very realistic and powerful, as is often the case with David Ayer.


In 2012, the director released his third feature film, End of Watch, with Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña. Once again set in Los Angeles, the film tells the story of two young police officers threatened with death by a cartel. Ayer therefore once again plunges his audience into an ultra-realistic urban, dark and villainous environment. Very productive, in 2014 he presented no less than two feature films in cinemas. The first, Sabotage, features veteran Arnold Schwarzenegger as a DEA agent, leading a solidarity unit, and the second, Fury, takes Brad Pitt and Shia LaBeouf to the battlefields of the 1945 war.


The director is then chosen to be at the helm of one of the most anticipated blockbusters of 2016 since it is Suicide Squad, a badass superhero film with a four-star cast including, among others, Will Smith, Margot Robbie , Jared Leto, Cara Delevingne, Jai Courtney, Joel Kinnaman or Viola Davis.
