A native of Brooklyn, Darren Aronofsky grew up in a traditional Jewish family, but he turned away from religion quickly enough to take an interest in art. He studied directing and animation techniques at the prestigious Harvard University, where he met future Pi interpreter, Sean Gullette, with whom he shot his graduation short, Supermarket Sweep. With this success, he decides to adapt the novel "Last Exit to Brooklyn" by Hubert Selby Jr. in Requiem for a Dream. A veritable descent into hell linked to drugs and other addictions, the film is immediately noticed thanks to its editing effects and its theme composed by Clint Mansell. Having become a cult director for many young filmmakers after only two films, Darren Aronofsky moves away from the streets of New York to write a fantastic fable around immortality. He then spent more than six years producing and directing The Fountain, presented at the Venice Film Festival in September 2006. He directed his fiancée, actress Rachel Weisz, there.

Dividing the public as much as the critics, the film did not meet the success of Requiem for a Dream. In 2014, he produced his first peplum, Noé, adapted from the biblical episode of the Flood and Noah's Ark, with Russell Crowe and Jennifer Connelly, who collaborate again together, thirteen years after Un homme d'exception.
