Biography

It is known that people are conditionally divided into several groups: some need to work day and night, drenched in sweat in order to achieve at least some results, while others need a few moments to achieve many times greater success than the first - at least for the first sight. Among the latter is Sir Daniel Mike Blake Day-Lewis, an actor.

Childhood and youth

The future three-time Oscar winner was born in London. It happened on April 29, 1957. His parents were the Irish poet Cecil Day-Lewis and the Jewish actress Jill Balcon, the daughter of Alfred Hitchcock's colleague, producer Michael Balcon. Daniel was not the first child in the family - from previous marriages, Cecil and Jill also had children.

As a schoolboy, young Day-Lewis saw on TV a film adaptation of Barry Hines' story "Friendship with a Kestrel," directed by Ken Loach. The tape made an indelible impression on the boy, prompting him to set foot on the path of the actor.

In 1970, Daniel became a member of the legendary Royal Shakespeare Company, in the ranks of which he remained for many years.

Movies

Day-Lewis first came to the set at the age of fourteen, starring in the cameo role of a young vandal in the film "Sunday Bloody Sunday" by John Schlesinger ("End Station", "Away from the Madding Crowd", "Pacific Heights").

Daniel's full-fledged debut on the wide screen took place in 1982 in the film "Gandhi" by Richard Attenborough ("A Bridge Too Far", "In Love and War", "Closing the Circle"). It is worth mentioning that before that Day-Lewis managed to take part in several television projects - in the series "Play of the Month" and "Shades of Darkness".

Two years later, the actor appeared in the film "Bounty", directed by Roger Donaldson ("The Fastest Indian", "The Baker Street Robbery", "The Hungry Rabbit Attacks"). The film was an adaptation of the novel by Richard Hugh "Captain Bligh and Mr. Christian" and told about the mutiny on the ship "Bounty" sailing from Haiti. The cast of the film was truly stellar: Mel Gibson, Anthony Hopkins, Laurence Olivier, Liam Neeson and Bernard Hill.

However, Day-Lewis's fame as a film actor was brought about by other films - "A Room with a View" by James Ivory ("Homes End", "Living Life with Picasso", "At the End of the Day") and "My Beautiful Laundry" by Stephen Frears (" Queen "," Philomena "," Dangerous Liaisons "). Both films were released a year after Bounty and were warmly received by the audience, and critics even called Daniel the main actor's discovery of the year.

The success of Rooms with a View and My Lovely Laundry led director Philip Kaufman to become interested in the actor (Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Pen of the Marquis de Sade, The Great Northfield Raid). Kaufman invited Day-Lewis to his next project - the adaptation of the novel "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" by the Czech-French writer Milan Kundera. Daniel agreed. The film was released in 1988.

In 1989, Daniel Day-Lewis starred in Jim Sheridan (Get Rich or Die, Dream House, Tablets of Fate) in My Left Foot, a fictional story of the Irish artist and writer Christie Brown. For participation in this film, the actor received a BAFTA award and his first Oscar. The same year Carlos Sorin's New Jersey Smile, which also starred Day-Lewis, was less successful.

Three years later, Daniel starred in the film adaptation of The Last of the Mohicans by James Fenimore Cooper directed by Michael Mann (Human Hunter, Own Man, Fight, Johnny D.). The actor gained muscle mass and brought his physical form into excellent condition, so he looked very impressive on the screen (with a height of 1.87 m, his weight was 97 kg). For this role, the actor also received a BAFTA award.

In 1993 he first starred with Martin Scorsese (Taxi Driver, Nice Guys, Island of the Damned) in the film adaptation of Edith Wharton's novel Age of Innocence. In this film, Michelle Pfeiffer and Winona Ryder were Day-Lewis's colleagues on the set. In the same year, Jim Sheridan's film In the Name of the Father was released, which tells the story of the Guildford Four. To participate in this film, Daniel dropped about 13 kilograms.

In 1996, Day-Lewis starred in Nicholas Heitner's Crucible (History Lovers, The Madness of King George, One Servant, Two Masters). The film was an adaptation of the play of the same name by Arthur Miller - the future father-in-law of Daniel - and told about the events that took place during the trial of the Salem witches. In "Cruel Test" the actor again had a chance to play with Winona Ryder.

A year later, Day-Lewis and Sheridan's next collaboration came out - the film Boxer, in which David was accompanied by Emily Watson, Brian Cox, Kenneth Cranham and Gerard McSorley. After this film, the actor decided to leave the cinema, preferring to this first carpentry, and then shoe - for some time Daniel even worked as a shoemaker in Italy.

With great difficulty, director Martin Scorsese, actor Leonardo DiCaprio and producer Harvey Weinstein managed to persuade Day-Lewis to star in Gangs of New York, an adaptation of the documentary book of the same name by Herbert Osbery. The tape was released in 2002. For his participation in Gangs of New York, Daniel Day-Lewis received BAFTA and Screen Actors Guild awards.

In 2005, a film by Rebecca Miller, the actor's wife, was released under the title The Ballad of Jack and Rose. Daniel played the main role in it. Two years later, the actor co-starred with Paul Thomas Anderson (Boogie Nights, Knocking Love, Inborn Vice) in the film adaptation of Upton Sinclair's Oil. Day-Lewis received his second Oscar on February 24, 2008 for the role of oilman Daniel Plainview.

Daniel's next appearance on the silver screen was in 2012 in the biopic about the sixteenth president of the United States of America "Lincoln". The film was directed by the master of his craft Steven Spielberg ("Close Encounters of the Third Degree", "Jurassic Park", "Catch Me If You Can"). Like most of Day-Lewis's previous work, this film was an adaptation, this time based on Doris Chris Goodwin's The Rivalry.

For the lead role in Lincoln, Daniel Day-Lewis received his third Oksar for the lead male role, which was an unprecedented event in world cinema. It also contributed to the hit of the actor in the 100 most influential people in the world according to the Times magazine in 2013.

It is known that Daniel Day-Lewis is an adherent of Stanislavsky's acting system from the stage. Perhaps this is the explanation for the actor's numerous awards - Golden Globe, Saturn, Empire, Sputnik, David di Donatello, MTV Movie Awards and others.

Personal life

From the late eighties until 1996, Daniel dated actress Isabelle Adjani (Summer Killing, Queen Margot, The Last Lesson). After the couple broke up, Ajani gave birth to a son from the actor, who was named Gabriel-Kane Day-Lewis. The couple has never been in a registered relationship.

Daniel got married later - after filming "The Ordeal". While working on this film, the actor met the young Rebecca Miller ("By Mutual Agreement", "Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle," "Cucumber") - the daughter of Arthur Miller, on whose work Nicholas Heithner's film was filmed.

In 1998, the couple had their first son, Ronan Cal Day-Lewis, and four years later, the second, Cashal Blake Day-Lewis. Currently Daniel, Rebecca and their children live alternately in Ireland and the United States.

fact

Daniel Day-Lewis now

Day-Lewis prefers a secluded lifestyle. The actor rarely appears in public and gives interviews even less often, so many aspects of Daniel's biography remain a secret behind seven locks (although sometimes photos appear on the Web covering the details of his life).

On December 25, 2017, the second collaboration between Daniel Day-Lewis and Paul Thomas Anderson, entitled "Phantom Threads", will be released. The film tells the story of the behind the scenes of the London fashion industry in the mid-twentieth century.
