Biography

Julian Barnes is a contemporary British novelist, postmodern icon and a fleeting character in The Diary of Bridget Jones. The writer is a principled bourgeois, who opposed the romance of rebellion with family happiness, and with an intricate metaphor - simple literary language.

fact

Childhood and youth

The writer was born in the first post-war winter into a family of French language teachers. A month and a half after Julian's appearance, the Barnes moved from Leicester to a suburb of London. When the boy was 10 years old, his mother told him that he had too much fantasy. As a teenager, Barnes sympathized with Ilya Oblomov, because, like the character of Ivan Goncharov, he did not like getting up from the couch in the morning.

At Oxford, Julian studied French and Russian and at the age of 19 went with his comrades to the USSR in a rented minibus. The young men drove through France, two Germany and Poland to Brest. Then the way of the tourists who spent the night in tents passed through Minsk, Moscow, Leningrad, Kharkov, Kiev and Odessa. Travelers returned via Romania. Barnes kept a travel diary, which included not only photographs and notes, but also Soviet artifacts, for example, a wrapper from the Alenka chocolate bar.

Then there was a trip to France, during which Julian found himself in the Parisian Museum of Gustave Moreau and forever fell in love with painting and work in the media. Barnes recalls that he suffered from "debilitating shyness" as a young man.

Books

Barnes's first major work, Metroland, tells the story of young men who went from rebel to yuppie. Contrary to literary traditions, the writer does not condemn such a metamorphosis of heroes. In 1997, the work was filmed.

Born on the same day as detective classics Edgar Allan Poe and Patricia Highsmith Barnes couldn't help but pay tribute to the genre. Julian published most of his investigative novels under the pseudonym Dan Kavanagh, borrowing his wife's surname for him.

Moreover, the work "Duffy got stuck" was written in 2 weeks (while the author spent 8 years on the creation of a serious "Metroland"). However, the book "Arthur and George", which tells about the investigation carried out by the literary father of Sherlock Holmes, was published by the prose writer under his own name.

Another writer who became a character in Barnes's work is the author of Madame Bovary, Gustave Flaubert. The hero of the novel "Flaubert's Parrot" Geoffrey learns that two museums are exhibiting a stuffed bird, allegedly standing on the table of the French writer while writing "A Simple Soul". The work made Barnes famous, and a photo of a postmodernist with a parrot on his shoulder began to precede an interview with him.

A number of Julian's works have grown out of his work as a reporter. For example, "A Pedant in the Kitchen" is based on a gastronomic column that the writer wrote in a newspaper, and the book "Open Your Eyes" is based on Barnes's reports on painting exhibitions.

Personal life

At the age of 32, the writer met the love of his life - literary agent Pat Kavanagh, who died in 2008 when Barnes was 62. Nothing - not the age difference (Pat was 6 years older than her husband), not the betrayal of his wife (Kavanagh left Barnes to the woman prose writer Janet Winterson), nor even the death of his wife could destroy Julian's love.

The death of his wife led Julian to thoughts of suicide, but the writer realized that with his suicide he would take the life of his beloved for the second time, because his wife was alive as long as he remembered her. The writer has no children, to some extent his offspring are replaced by the daughters and grandchildren of his older brother Jonathan, a specialist in ancient philosophy.

Barnes is an agnostic and in his story "The History of the World in 10½ Chapters" he retells the story of the Flood from the perspective of a tree parasite that accidentally escaped on the ship of Noah. In the same book, Julian dreamed up that the Leicester City football team, for which the prose writer is rooting, won the tournament, and 26 years later, fantasy became a reality.

The writer loves Russian literature - Anton Chekhov and Ivan Turgenev. Barnes's favorite novel is A Hero of Our Time by Mikhail Lermontov.

Julian Barnes now

In 2016, Julian visited Russia for the second time. The prose writer was a guest of honor at the Moscow Fair of Non-Fiction Literature, where he presented the book The Noise of Time - three stylized dialogues between Dmitry Shostakovich and demonized Soviet power.

In an interview with the Russian newspaper correspondent Pavel Basinsky, the writer admitted that he loved the music of the author of the "Leningrad Symphony" ever since he heard it at the age of 15, and during his youth trip to the Soviet Union he bought records with the composer's works at GUM.

In 2018, two books by Barnes were published in Russian - a collection of essays "Open your eyes" (an overview of the work of 17 artists through the prism of their biographies), published in the UK in 2015, and "One Story" (a novel about the love of a 19-year-old boy Paul and Susan, 48).

In March 2019, it became known that the founders of the Yasnaya Polyana Prize had included One Story in a long list of nominees in the Foreign Literature category. The winner of the award becomes famous in October. In 2018, the Israeli prose writer Amos Oz became the laureate of Yasnaya Polyana, who died shortly after the results were announced.

"Grief lies in a vertical plane and rotates, while mourning is horizontal." ("Living Standards") "The difference between youth and old age lies, among other things, in the fact that young people come up with a future for themselves, and old people - a past." ("A presentiment of the end") "When they offend my country, a dormant, if not dormant, patriotism awakens." (“There is nothing to be afraid”) “Books give meaning to life.
