Damien Chazelle is studying cinema at the prestigious Harvard University. Before nurturing ambitions as a director, the young man wanted to become a musician. He therefore practices the drums intensively, but moves away more and more from this discipline after high school, knowing full well that he does not have the necessary talent to become a great drummer.

The future director therefore turns to the cinema; he therefore left to study it at the prestigious Harvard University. It was during his schooling that he directed his first feature film, Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench. This first film against a background of jazz music (his passion) was shot in black and white and won over the critics in all the festivals where he played.

In 2013, the Franco-American lends his pen to filmmaker Ed Gass-Donnelly to write the screenplay for The Last Exorcism: Part II, a horror film set against a background of demonic possession. After this foray into the horror genre, the filmmaker returns to his passion for music by delivering the screenplay for Grand Piano, directed by Eugenio Mira. This thriller carried by Elijah Wood tells the story of a pianist threatened with death. In the process, the director stages the short film Whiplash , the story of a drummer ready to do anything to become the best.

Thanks to this little film presented at the 2013 Sundance Festival, Chazelle made a strong impression and managed to find the funding to direct Whiplash, a feature film version.

A year later, the young man, barely 30 years old, achieved consecration by receiving numerous awards at Deauville and Sundance for Whiplash. The film also received a standing ovation at the 2014 Cannes Directors' Fortnight and won 3 Oscars in 2015: best actor in a supporting role for JK Simmons, best editing and best sound mixing. Miles Teller stars in the film, a young drummer in a music school being bullied by an ultra demanding teacher forcefully embodied by JK Simmons.

Damien Chazelle has two great projects in his pocket: First Man, a biopic on astronaut Neil Armstrong and La La Land, a musical with the beautiful Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling.
