Biography
Coming from a modest family, a Greek mother and a Russian father who distinguished himself in the Resistance, Costa-Gavras left his native Greece after high school to settle in Paris - he obtained French nationality in 1968. Student in Letters to the Sorbonne, this assiduous spectator of the Cinémathèque joined IDHEC in 1956. He discovered film sets through the assistantship, first with Giono (Croesus in 1960), then Verneuil, Demy and René Clement. It was on the set of the Day and the Hour that he met the couple Simone Signoret-Yves Montand, with whom a long intellectual and artistic bond was established. He hired the two actors on his first feature film, Compartiment killers, a thriller which was very successful in 1965.
Costa-Gavras' taste for political and historical facts appears from his second opus , Un homme de trop, devoted to the Resistance, a period he will explore again in Special Section in 1975. But it is with his third film , Z in 1969, that he forged a reputation as a great committed filmmaker. Denunciation of the Dictatorship of the Colonels in Greece - even if the country is not named - the film won 2 prizes at Cannes (including one for the composition of an opinionated judge by Jean-Louis Trintignant) and 2 Oscars.
