Biography
The literary world is limitless, there are a great many authors whose books have won the highest awards, but have not received widespread popularity for a long time. Pulitzer Prize-winning Cormac McCarthy is a prime example. His bibliography contains about 10 novels in the genres of western, southern gothic, post-apocalypse. He also excelled as a screenwriter and playwright.

Over time, the writer officially changed his name to Cormac. They say that this is how he immortalized the memory of the legendary king of Ireland, Cormac Mac Art. According to another version, the McCarthy family insisted on "renaming" so as not to confuse father with son: Cormac means "son of Charles" in Gaelic.
When McCarthy was 4 years old, the family moved to Knoxville, Tennessee. Here, the writer graduated from St. Mary's Catholic School, and later entered the University of Tennessee. He studied for 2 years before being drafted into the army. McCarthy devoted 4 years to the US Air Force, then continued his studies, but never received a diploma.
fact
Personal life
Cormac McCarthy has been married three times. In 1961, his first wife was Lee Holliman, a student whom the writer met at the university. Baby Cullen was born in the union. Too young and unprepared for a serious life, McCarthy and Holliman divorced in 1962, even before the release of their debut novel.

In the summer of 1965, on a ship to Ireland, McCarthy met the singer Annie Delilah. A year later, the lovers played a wedding in Britain. Their marriage lasted 14 years, ending in 1981.
On January 2, 1998, McCarthy linked his personal life with Jennifer Winkley. Russian-speaking sources claim that the couple sealed the union in 2007. In fact, by 2006, the couple broke up. They raised their son John Francis together.

Books
Cormac McCarthy's literary career began in 1959 with the publication of a story in a student newspaper, and his first novel, The Guardian of the Garden, was released in 1965. The manuscript was approved by Albert Erskine of Random House, editor by William Faulkner. He devoted the next 20 years to McCarthy's writing.
McCarthy's early novels "Darkness Outside" (1968), "Child of God" (1973), "Suttree" (1979), although they deserved favorable reviews from critics and readers, did not radically change the author's biography. The situation improved after the publication of the book "Bloody Meridian" (1985).
In 2006, The New York Times magazine conducted a reader survey about the most significant book of the last quarter of the 20th century. "Bloody Meridian" took 3rd place after "Sweetheart" (1987) by Toni Morrison and "Inside the World" (1997) by Don DeLillo.
Director Todd Field was thinking about creating a film version of Blood Meridian. The premiere was scheduled for 2015 but never came out.
“He knew that terrible things had been done to him there and he had always believed that he did not want to know about ...
By 1992, no McCarthy book had sold more than 5,000 hardcover copies. However, Horses, Horses (1992) became a bestseller and won the National Book Critics Circle Award.
Horses, Horses, along with the novels Beyond the Line (1994) and Sodom and Gomorrah. Cities in the vicinity of this ”(1998) constitute the“ Frontier Trilogy ”.
McCarthy's next novel, No Country for Old Men (2005), was originally conceived as a script. The Coen brothers adapted it for the 2007 film of the same name, which won 4 Oscars and 75 awards worldwide.
Another example of a successful film based on McCarthy's novel is The Road (2006). The book received international recognition, and most importantly - the Pulitzer Prize. The film adaptation was released in 2009.
In 2012, McCarthy sold the original script, which was embodied in the thriller The Counselor (2013) by Ridley Scott. The film has a star cast: Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbender, Penelope Cruz, Cameron Diaz.
fact
Cormac McCarthy now
In 2020, the writer turns 87 years old. Recent photographs of him show that his head is covered with gray. Probably, old age affects not only appearance: there is no news on McCarthy's official website about upcoming new products - novels or films based on his scripts. Even if now the writer is hatching the idea of another bestseller, there is no information about it.
