fact
Childhood and youth
Clifford Donald Simak (this is how the science fiction surname is pronounced correctly) was born on August 3, 1904 in the small American town of Millville, located in Wisconsin. Subsequently, in most of the writer's works, the action was transferred to his home state. Clifford's paternal grandfather, whose surname is Szymak, immigrated to America from Bohemia, which is a historical region in Central Europe that has now become part of the western half of the Czech Republic.

Fantastic literature began to excite the mind of the boy from a young age, and influenced this work of the classic author Herbert Wells, who was the creator of such immortal works as The Time Machine, The Invisible Man and The War of the Worlds. After receiving his secondary education at one of the local schools, the young man moved to Madison, where he began to study journalism at the University of Wisconsin. However, he never got his diploma because he dropped out.
Further, the future author worked part-time in various print media in the Midwest until, in 1939, he signed a contract with one of the city newspapers in Minnesota, Minneapolis Star and Tribune. Clifford worked with her on an ongoing basis until his retirement, which took place in 1976. From 1949, the man worked as editor-in-chief of the news department at the Minneapolis Star newspaper, and from 1961 he was the coordinator of the popular science series Minneapolis Tribune.

Books
Clifford Simak first appeared as a writer in 1931, when his debut story, entitled The World of the Red Sun, was presented. The man spent the next year creating stories such as "A Voice in the Void", "Uncleanness from Space", "Golden Asteroid", "Mutiny on Mercury".

In 1933, Simak decided to leave literary activity. For this reason, over the next 5 years, his only published creation was the science fiction novel The Creator, which has a religious connotation that was extremely rare in the science fiction literature of that era. In this work, Clifford was the first of all representatives of the genre to try to rationally explain the fact that the universe was created by the demiurge.
Symak's full return to the art of writing took place in 1938. This time, recognition overtook him largely thanks to the collaboration with the glossy magazine Astounding Science Fiction, of which John Campbell was the chief editor. At various times, this edition has published works by Asimov, Heinlein, Kuttner, Sturgeon, Del Rey and Van Vogt. Clifford, together with these authors, was recognized as the creator of the golden age of fiction in America, which lasted 12 years, from 1938 to 1950.

The first works of the writer, among which was the 1939 novel "Space Engineers", were composed in such a way as to fully comply with the canons of "hard" science fiction. This subgenre is characterized by an emphasis on the technical component. The opposite is called "soft", which focuses on humanitarian fiction.
Gaining experience as a writer, Clifford chose to get off the beaten path and create a unique writing style, which the literary critics gave the name pastoral. In his later works, the man talked about peaceful contacts with UFOs and about the spiritual community of civilizations located on different sides of the immense universe. Aliens Simak would rather rest in one of the provincial bars of his native Wisconsin than engage in the enslavement of the Earth.

The writer believed that humanity has rather optimistic prospects, but at the same time he never tired of mentioning that every inhabitant of the Universe must start studying at the Galactic School as a first grader. In the creative biography of Clifford, there was also a period when he was engaged in writing westerns and stories about the war.
In 1952, a novel called "The City" was published for the first time, which was, in fact, a cycle of short stories. Simak wrote the book at a time when humanity was experiencing large-scale conflicts - first World War II and then the Korean War. Having composed and released the work "City", Clifford expressed a kind of protest against human cruelty and hostilities.
Ultimately, the literary world became acquainted with a utopia that tells about the Earth of the future, in which robots and Dogs with intelligence live instead of people. For this work, Simak was awarded the International Prize for Science Fiction in 1953, after which he received long-awaited fame throughout the world. Over the course of many years of creative biography, the author was awarded the prestigious literary prize "Hugo" 3 more times and 1 time - "Nebula".

In the Soviet Union, they learned about the talented writer only in 1957, after one of his stories, entitled “For the first time on Mercury”, was translated and published in the popular magazine Znaniye-Sila. From that moment on, several generations of Soviet adolescents and adults began to call Clifford one of their favorite science fiction authors. His works have been published in a series called "The Worlds of Clifford Simak".
In the 1960s, Simak wrote mostly novels, and in the next decade he focused on writing novels and short stories, as his physical condition began to deteriorate rapidly.
Despite this, the author continued to create almost until his death, which occurred in 1988. 8 years before this fateful event, one of his last works was published - the story "The Grotto of Dancing Deer". For this work, Simak was awarded at once three major literary awards that only existed in the world of science fiction: Locus, Nebula and Hugo.
The literary work of Clifford Simak in the future became an inspiration for various figures of world art. Several of his works have survived adaptation as feature films and TV series. In 1993, the Russian director Yuri Elkhov shot a motion picture called Anomaly, the script for which was taken from the novel All Flesh Is Grass. Actor Alexander Filippenko was entrusted with playing the role of the central character named Hiram.
An interesting fact is that Simak's art books have also found their way into the world of high fashion. In 2012, a Russian eyewear brand Fakoshima appeared, founded by designer Konstantin Shilyaev. When creating designer accessories, the man was inspired by the films of Stanley Kubrick, as well as the literary works of authors such as Simack, Bradbury, Heinlein and Wells.
