Biography

Son of Louise Lara, member of the Comédie Française, Claude Autant-Lara frequents the world of the spectacle closely, and more precisely that of the theater or the Russian ballets, during his childhood, even attending the famous creation of the "Rite of Spring" which will become one of the biggest artistic scandals of the 20th century. But it is for the cinema that he will take a passion, initiated into the 7th Art by a pawn of his high school, who prefers to take him to dark rooms during his (many) hours of detention.

Dismissed from his establishment in 1915, he left to continue his studies across the Channel and returned to France at the twilight of the First World War, to enroll at the School of Decorative Arts, where he befriended the future actor Julien Carette. It was alongside Marcel L'Herbier that he made his film debut, as a decorator and assistant director on L'Homme du large (1920). In return, the director will produce Fait-divers (1923), Claude Autant-Lara's first short film as a director, and will continue to lend him a hand until 1926, notably by collaborating on "Vittel".

After working alongside René Clair (Paris qui dort) or Jean Renoir (Nana), Claude Autant-Lara found himself in debt following the failure of Construire un feu (1930), his adaptation of Jack London, and s he exiles to the United States, where he befriends other expatriates such as Luis Buñuel, and shoots French versions of American films. He thus directs Buster Keaton and Douglas Fairbanks Jr., but he tastes little of the politics of the Hollywood studios, which sees in him only a simple maker, and returns to France in 1932.

It was on his return that he embarked on the adventure of long, thanks to Ciboulette (1933), but his troubles were not over for all that: marked by editing concerns, the film was a new failure for the director, who really struggled to make a name for himself and ended the decade by assisting (without being credited) Maurice Lehmann at the production of L'Affaire du Mail de Lyon, Le Ruisseau and Fric-frac, which nevertheless enabled him to make acquaintance with the screenwriter Jean Aurenche. The two men indeed began a fruitful collaboration during the Occupation, a period during which Autant-Lara finally took off: from Lettres d'amour (1942) to Sylvie and the Phantom (1945), including Douce (1943). , the carelessness displayed by his feature films contrasts with the climate of the Second World War,

A recognition that does not end with the conflict, and Claude Autant-Lara will even live a golden period of fifteen years, where he signs his most outstanding films. The best known of them is, of course, La Traversée de Paris (1956), whose poster will be the only one to bring together Jean Gabin, Bourvil and Louis de Funès, and which takes place during World War II, at the same title that Le Diable au corps, adaptation of the homonymous novel by Raymond Radiguet with Gérard Philipe released in 1947. Between these two films, Claude Autant-Lara stages another classic, L'Auberge rouge (1951) with Fernandel. Then followed Le Rouge et le Noir (1954) and La Jument verte (1959), which marked the end of his heyday.

Because in 1954, year of the release of Rouge et le noir, the filmmaker was at the heart of the article written by François Truffaut in Les Cahiers du Cinéma, in which he denigrated "a certain trend in French cinema" and attacked the works of a few. compatriots among which Claude Autant-Lara, to whom the future director of the Four hundred blows nevertheless finds certain qualities. But its popularity fell with the arrival of the New Wave. Always alongside Jean Aurenche, he did not remain without filming during the 1960s, but struggled to make an impression, even if Le Comte de Monte Cristo (1961), Le Journal d'une femme en blanc (1965), Le Franciscain de Bourges (1967) or Les Patates (1969) stand out a bit.

After a stint on television, he resumed his path to film sets during the second half of the 1970s. But his numerous conflicts with the producer Marcel Dassault got the better of his temerity, to such an extent that he denied his last feature film, Gloria (1977), even declaring that his career as a director ended in 1975. Bitter, he signs a few pamphlets (including "Télé-Mafia", where he returns to his stormy experience on the small screen) and memoirs where he settle accounts with everyone.

At the end of the 1980s, he joined forces with the Front National and was elected to the European Parliament, which he had to leave after controversial comments about the gas chambers. The same goes for the Académie des Beaux-Arts, of which he was vice-president in 1989, and these outings further tarnish the image of a director who died on February 5, 2000, as a result of a long illness, to the point of sometimes weakening the strength of his cinematographic work.
