Biography
Christopher Tolkien was the son of famed writer John Tolkien, who wrote The Hobbit, or There and Back again and the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The linguist, editor, and university professor also studied literature and worked on works that his famous father did not manage to publish during his lifetime.
fact
Childhood and youth
Christopher John Ruel Tolkien was born in the UK and became the 3rd son of the iconic writer and his wife, Edith Brett. Born on November 21, 1924, the baby grew up in the company of brothers, not knowing the hardships and troubles in childhood.
John, Michael and Christopher Tolkien
Following the eldest heirs, John and Michael, the child went to school in Oxford, and then entered the College of Orators, which was a Catholic boarding school. There he achieved success in the field of literature and art and, thanks to his natural talents, won a number of awards.
During World War II, Christopher, following the example of his famous parent, joined the Royal Army in the Air Force. He took pilot courses and became a reserve officer, where he served safely until 1945.
According to photocopies of documents, Tolkien corresponded with parents who criticized the actions of Germany, which killed hundreds of thousands of people. He held his father's opinion that the world is ruled by machines, and has maintained this point of view for many years.

After the end of hostilities, Christopher was demobilized from the army and, after spending a vacation in his home, went to Oxford University. He studied English Language and Literature with fellow Trinity College students and earned his BA at the age of 25.
Wanting to continue his studies and improve in the field of linguistics, Tolkien stayed on for additional courses, which brought the 2nd prestigious diploma. Then he joined a family circle of readers and critics, and also joined the Inklings, headed by his father.
In his youth, a great influence on the formation of Christopher's personality was exerted by the works of a parent, first perceived as fairy tales for children. As a teenager, he left reviews about the adventures of Bilbo Baggins, some of which were recorded and survived to this day.

Books
The adult biography of the Oxford graduate was predetermined from the beginning and began with editorial work and translation work. He attended a discussion society where contemporary writings were discussed and helped fellow writers get into the literary cycle.
Young Tolkien's acquaintances included Clive Staples Lewis and Charles Williams, as well as Owen Barfield, Roy Campbell, Colin Hardy and Adam Fox. These people belonged to different cultures and religions, but they actively exchanged opinions and showed creative growth.

Each time he plunged into the world of fantastic works, Christopher touched the beautiful and formed an artistic taste. Over time, he became an open-minded critic, giving valuable advice and not shy about expressing his overwhelming feelings.
A descendant of the creator of Middle-earth often spoke with the parent and helped him in editing texts and creating large-scale maps. Detailed planning of the universe with Breech, Gondor and Arnor required the utmost attention, time and effort.
Tolkien's independent brainchild was The Saga of Herver and Heydrek, translated from Icelandic and published in the 60s. In a unique preface and commentaries that appeared during the story, the author expressed thoughts about the ancient legendary worlds.

Literature left room for teaching, and Christopher became a professor at Oxford, following in his father's footsteps. He was respected by students for his extensive knowledge and ability in a scientific dispute to listen to the parties to the end.
In 1975, after leaving the university department, Christopher, with the participation of like-minded people, began editing books. He revised The Silmarillion, not completed by his parent, and published A History of Middle-earth using the author's draft.
As literary executor of the deceased John Tolkien, his son had collected all the manuscripts by the early 2000s. This is how the story "Children of Hurin" and the novel "Beren and Lúthien" appeared, as well as the work "The Fall of Gondolin", which became the last of his father's works.
In addition, the bibliography was supplemented by a book not related to Middle-earth, published under the title The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrun. Her appearance attracted the attention of thousands of fans of historical fantasy, and an unprecedented noise arose in the literary community.

Shortly before that, Peter Jackson began filming Tolkien's books, where Ian McKellen and Christopher Lee played the roles of magicians. Elijah Wood, Viggo Mortensen, Orlando Bloom and Dominic Monaghan played members of a magical brotherhood and inhabitants of a fictional land.
The films, which received numerous nominations, displeased Christopher, who believed that the legendary work was turned into a simple action movie. He tried through the courts to achieve the termination of large-scale filming, but, not having the rights to adapt the trilogy, in the end he achieved nothing.
In 2009, the same confrontation arose with The Hobbit, but New Line Cinema miraculously managed to dismiss the suit. The production of 3 series was approached extremely scrupulously, respecting the opinion of the author's heir and not wanting to take risks.

Personal life
In the personal life of Christopher Tolkien, there were 2 legal marriages, but he became truly happy in France in the company of his last wife. Baillie Klass assisted her husband in the drafts of the manuscripts, as well as the texts and maps that were changed.

The professor and linguist had a son from his first wife, who became famous as a writer, lawyer and film consultant. He quarreled with his parent over collaboration with the film crew, who distorted John Tolkien's ideas and vulgarized his tome.
With other children, Rachel and Adam, Christopher kept in touch, and they often visited the house in the Draguignan commune. The only forbidden topic was considered a scandalous film adaptation, no matter what, made and hit the big screen.
fact
Death
On January 16, 2020, the Var-Matin edition reported that the son of the famous John Tolkien died in a hospital in the Var region. According to some reports, he had heart problems since childhood, and another strong blow became the cause of sudden death.
