Biography
Born in Paris, Christian-Albert-François Maudet studied architecture in Decorative Arts, then, accompanied by his friend Jacques Chabraison, designed film posters for the First Nationale, an American company. It was at this time that he decided to be called Christian-Jaque. He continued to vary his activities by becoming a journalist and then a cinema decorator, a profession that he exercised from 1927 to 1931 and which enabled him to collaborate on numerous occasions with the director Andre Hugon (notably on "La Grande passion" in 1928, "The Woman and the Nightingale" in 1930 or "The Sandman" in 1931).
In 1932, he took the plunge and made his first film, Le Bidon d'or, set in the world of motor racing. With an impressive pace, he chained the vaudevilles, a cinematographic genre then in great demand where he excelled. In 1936, his police comedy Monsieur Person with Jules Berry in the title role, allowed him to gain wider notoriety. That same year, he teamed up with Fernandel through the lucrative One of the Legion. Christian-Jaque greatly contributes to making the actor the star he will become. The two men will collaborate six times thereafter, their most famous film remaining undoubtedly the hilarious (and very profitable) François Ier released in 1938, in which Fernandel is transported in the past at the court of the famous king of France. ... In 1939, Raphaël the tattooed came out,
In the climate of the Occupation, he changed register by tackling the drama, with Les Disparus de Saint-Agil (1939, considered his best film) taking place in an orphanage and the moving Hell of the Angels ( 1941) focused on juvenile delinquency. There followed, still in the same dramatic vein, The Assassination of Father Christmas (1941), Premier Bal (id.), The Fantastic Symphony (1942, a biography of the musician Hector Berlioz), and finally Carmen, adapted from the novel by Prosper Mérimée. After having fought with the French Interior Forces at the end of the war, he gave shape to one of his best films, Boule de suif, a pamphlet against intolerance which also allowed him to express his patriotic feeling. The following year, Un Revenant was presented at the first Cannes Film Festival: by attracting 3,
If La Chartreuse de Parme (1948) and Singoalla (1950) marked a slight decline in its success, Christian-Jaque made his first color film in 1950, Barbe-Bleue. He continues with the historical fresco Fanfan la Tulipe (1952) carried by the very charismatic Gérard Philipe, huge commercial success (best staging at the Cannes Festival and Golden Bear at the Berlin Festival). Also in 1952, he met, on the set of Adorable Creatures, his future wife Martine Carol (before her, he was married to Christiane Delyne, Simone Renant and Renée Faure): he offered him several headlining roles in historical films which unfortunately do not live up to his talent (Lucrèce Borgia in 1953, Madame du Barry in 1954, Nana in 1955 and Nathalie in 1957).
After Babette goes to war with Claudia Cardinale and the very young Brigitte Bardot, success gradually abandons Christian-Jaque, and his films lose quality (the advent of the New Wave and its main figures, denigrating his work, has a lot to do with it). Some historical films (Madame Sans-Gêne in 1961, The Black Tulip in 1964, Lady Hamilton in 1968), and average police officers (The Saint takes the lookout in 1966) clearly show that the director is running out of steam. It doesn't matter. He remains one of the great filmmakers in the history of French cinema. At the beginning of the 1980s, Christian-Jaque focused on the small screen and in 1985 produced a documentary on Marcel Carné, before retiring from the profession. He died in 1994 of a heart attack. His many distinctions, cinematographic (César d '
