Biography

Singer Chris Norman rose to fame in the 70s as a member of the Smokie band. After a ten-year career, the vocalist began performing as a solo artist. To this day, the songs "What Can I Do", "Living Next Door To Alice", "I'll Meet You At Midnig" and "Stumblin'In", recorded by a duet with Susie Quatro, are popular with both over-age audiences and youth.

fact

Childhood and youth

Christopher Ward Norman was born on October 25, 1950, in North Yorkshire (England). The vocalist was born into an artistic family, so it is not surprising that in the future music became the work of his whole life. It is known that the artist's grandparents toured England during the First World War.

Their daughter Patricia (Chris's mother) sang and danced in provincial theaters. In turn, Percy Norman (the father of the performer) performed as part of the dance-comedy group The Four Jokers, which traveled all over Europe in the 30-40s.

Chris's parents, no doubt, were versed in show business and knew firsthand about the difficulties that their beloved child would face. They did not insist on their son's pop career, but when it became clear that music was the only thing that interests the son, mom and dad of the future author of the song "Gypsy Queen" began to help the child in every possible way in his endeavors.

Later, Norman, in an interview with media representatives, admitted that he owed his popularity to a greater extent to his father. When the vocalist was 7 years old, dad gave him his first guitar. At that time, rock and roll sounded in the hearts and minds of teenagers, and Chris, like many, was fascinated by this direction.

At the time, his idols were Elvis Presley, Little Richard and Lonnie Donegan. Then Chris's parents traveled around the country a lot, as a result, as a teenager, the performer changed nine different schools and lived in various places in England, such as Redcar, Luton and Nottingham.

In 1962, the Norman family returned to Bradford, his mother's hometown. There, at the age of 12, Chris began studying at a Roman Catholic school for boys. Here he met his future Smokie bandmates - Terry Uttley and Alan Silson.

At the time of their acquaintance, the new teen idols were groups whose repertoire was based on beat music - the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, as well as folk singer Bob Dylan. Chris and Alan spent all their free time together, learning new songs on the guitars. Subsequently, Terry joined them, and then a friend who played drums - Ron Kelly, after whose appearance the comrades organized their first group.

In 1965 Norman, who had never had a brilliant knowledge of mathematics or the humanities, left school. The dream of conquering the musical Olympus became his fix idea. The vocalist's father understood and shared his son's passions, but still insisted that the heir first mastered a profession.

It is known that during his youth, the artist went through a dozen different occupations: he was a sales agent, a warehouse clerk, a worker at an art glass factory and even a loader. True, all these professions were not to his liking - Christopher still spent all his free time playing music.

Music

When the vocalist's friends graduated from high school, they began performing as a band in Yorkshire and elsewhere in Britain. They played in workers' clubs and pubs, earnings barely covered the costs, but the enthusiastic guys did not need millions. At first the group was called "The Yen", then "Long Side Down" (apparently with a hint of LSD), "The Sphynx" and "Essence".

They began to be called "Smokie" only in 1974. According to the musicians, this name was chosen by them because of the hoarse, as if smoky voice of their vocalist. On stage, the guys often performed in snow-white shirts with ruffles or elegant suits.

The band made their first demos in 1968, and although they were not well received by the public, Smokie continued to work hard on quality and lyrics. The band gained popularity after participating in numerous radio shows.

The songs "Smokie" quickly became popular not only in their native England, but also in the USA and Europe. At that time, every tenth composition of the group acquired the status of an international hit, and the tour of the performers successfully took place throughout Europe and Australia. It is worth noting that most of all the creativity of the guys from "Smokie" was loved by the listeners of Germany, where their songs were regularly played on all popular radio stations.

The group reached its peak of popularity in 1978, when their famous disc "The Montreux Album" was released, in the same year Chris Norman first tried himself in a solo performance, singing a duet with Susie Quatro.

Since 1975, over seven years, Smokie have recorded as many as nine albums and twenty-four hit singles. After that, the band took a time out, and now the musicians only occasionally get together to please their fans.

Their vocalist, who had long dreamed of solo performances, in 1986 recorded his own hit "Midnight Lady" (a video was shot on the track), which was produced by the founder of "Modern Talking" Dieter Bohlen. The single, which received a lot of rave reviews from listeners and critics, became the starting point in Norman's career.

After its release, the artist was no longer included in Smokie. Today Chris's solo career is estimated at two dozen albums, and he is not going to retire, releasing fresh records every two years.

Personal life

Fans of Norman's talent know that neither he nor "Smokie" would have achieved such success if not for Chris's wife, who was his muse throughout her husband's creative career. The musician met Linda McKenzie at a time when the Smokie group was just taking the first steps to fame. The vocalist fell in love at first sight with this modest blonde girl, and soon they began dating.

An interesting fact is that, despite the turbulent rock and roll life and constant travel with tours, Chris and Linda have become a harmonious couple, and their relationship is now as strong as it was forty years ago. At first, the girl worked as a stylist for musicians and traveled a lot with them on tours and concerts.

But, as it turned out, such a wandering life was not for her, and she returned to her hometown of Elgin, where she got a job as a secretary in a local company. Despite the fact that the lovers could not often be together, their relationship did not suffer at all from this.

Chris called his beloved, even while on tour, and she, in turn, marked the days on the calendar every day until Chris returned from another tour. Chris and Linda's wedding took place in 1970. Linda Norman is the irreplaceable wife of the famous musician, who gave him five children: Brian, Paul, Michael, Stephen and Susan Jane.

For the past 23 years, the couple have lived with their children on the Isle of Man. The couple also have four grandchildren - Daniel, Jack, Tom and Ben. Daniel lives with his grandparents on the Isle of Man, while Jack, Tom and Ben live in England. It is known that the eminent vocalist also has an eldest daughter, Sharon, from the girl with whom the artist met before meeting McKenzie.

Chris Norman now

In September 2017, Chris's new album "Don't Knock The Rock" was released on the vocalist's label "Solo Sound Records". The disc includes 14 tracks. One song ("Resurrection") is co-written by Norman with his guitarist Jeff Carline, the other 13 are by Chris himself. The album also featured musicians from Norman's band Jeff Carline (guitar), Dorino Goldbranner (drums), Michelle Plum (backing vocals) and former vocalist Ellie Luha.

Fans will be delighted that the work contains both rock compositions and ballads, which, in one way or another, express the spirit of rock and roll. Now the eminent artist travels around the cities with a concert program, the track list of which contains both old singles and songs from the new disc. It is known that as part of the tour, scheduled until 2018, the singer will perform in St. Petersburg and Moscow in October 2017.

Despite the working schedule, the vocalist does not forget about the fans. On Facebook, the performer regularly uploads photos from the performances, and also shares with subscribers the news that happens in his life. Among other things, on the official website of Norman, anyone can familiarize themselves with materials related to the artist's creative biography and even order the performer of the song "I'll Meet You At Midnig" for their event.
