Biography
The voice of the era. A wonderful person. An excellent vocalist with impeccable technique. The best example and motivator. Member of a cult group. It would seem what else is needed. Live and reap the benefits of popularity. But on the other side of the scale, the eternal companions of success are alcohol, drugs, depression, the search for something better (maybe yourself). And it is not known which side will outweigh. In 2017, Chris Cornell, the star of the world show business, a follower of grunge and Soundgarden lead singer, swayed in his favor.
fact
Childhood and youth
Christopher John Boyle (that is Chris's full name) was born in July 1964 in Seattle into the family of an Irish pharmacist Ed Boyle and a Jewish accountant Karen Cornell. After his parents divorced, Chris took his mother's surname.
A passion for music woke up in childhood when the boy found the Beatles records. As a teenager, Cornell suffered from depression, sat out at home in seclusion, and dropped out of school.
At the age of 12, he alone gained access to drugs and prescription drugs in a known way and began life in an altered state of consciousness. The strength to live in the tie was enough for a year, and at the age of 15 it all started all over again.
Before becoming the leader of the grunge movement, Chris played drums in rock cover bands. I managed to work as a waiter and assistant chef in a restaurant, selling seafood in bulk.

Music
Serious musical biography began in 1984. Cornell and his friends founded Soundgarden, where at first he managed to sing while sitting at the drum kit. The group also included Kim Tayil, Hiro Yamamoto. Later Scott Sandqvist joined the band, and Chris took up vocals. A few years later, Scott was replaced by cult drummer Matt Cameron, who at that time was the best drummer in the city.
In 1987 and 1988, the band released a mini-album, Screaming Life and Fopp, respectively, both on the Sub Pop label, and in 1990, their compilation, Screaming Life / Fopp.
On October 31, 1988, SST Records released Ultramega OK, the debut studio album by the rock band Soundgarden. In 1990, the album received a Grammy nomination for Best Metal Performance. In 2017, the band decided to release an extended version of the album, adding six bonuses, which are early versions of the tracks "Head Injury", "Beyond theWheel", "Incessant Mace (Short)", "He Didn't", "All Your Lie "and" Incessant Mace (Long) ".
After the release of "Ultramega OK" Hiro Yamamoto left the band and decided to continue his education. Hiro was replaced by Jason Everman of Nirvana, and later by Ben Shepherd. With this line-up, Soundgarden recorded the album Badmotorfinger in 1991. The album was also nominated for a Grammy and was certified double platinum in the US by the Recording Industry Association of America.
In 1994, the fourth studio album was released - "Superunknown", which was waiting for the same grandiose success. The songs of the album, in contrast to the previously released ones, turned out to be more varied, the influence of the Beatles was felt. Soundgarden received worldwide acclaim, with rave critics later calling the album the pinnacle of the band. The album peaked at number one on the Billboard 200, went platinum five times in the United States, and three times in Canada. Clips were removed for all the singles from the album, and the song "Black Hole Sun" became the band's calling card.
In 1995 the band received 2 Grammy awards and 2 nominations. Album "Superunknown" was included in the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" by Rolling Stone magazine, and was ranked fifth on the "Top Ten List of Guitar Albums of 1994" by Guitar World magazine. The songs from the album were used as soundtracks for 3DO and PlayStation games.
After the tour in support of the album, Cornell took a break due to problems with his vocal cords. Chris spent this time profitably collaborating with the shocking king of heavy metal, "The Great and Terrible" Alice Cooper, and even wrote a song for him.
The last, but not so successful album "Down on the Upside" was released in 1996. And in 1997, the band was disbanded. In January 2010, Cornell announced the reunion of Soundgarden on Twitter, and in November 2012 the band released their new album, King Animal.
Chris Cornell has an incredible voice with a range of four octaves and powerful vocal belting technique. The list of the musician's achievements was replenished by the not always successful, but also beloved by fans solo albums "Euphoria Morning" (1999), "Carry On" (2007), "Scream" (2009), "Songbook" (2011), "Higher Truth" (2015).
Having tasted the fruits of individual labor, Cornell solved the problem with alcohol and joined the "Audioslave" project, with which he worked until 2007. The band released three albums, also successful: the album of the same name went platinum in the United States, "Out of Exile" reached number one in the US charts, and songs from "Revelations" were used in the film "Miami Police. Department of Morals ". Audioslave was the first rock band to perform in Cuba after the erosion of the blockade.
A serious car accident has strangely changed Chris's work. He began to collaborate with arranger and producer Timbaland, who was distantly related to rock music. As a result, in 2009 the album “Scream” came out, which surprised the fans very much. The latter accused Chris of betraying the ideals of grunge and pop. The video for the song "Part of Me" starred a star who has nothing to do with music at all - boxer Vladimir Klitschko.
Cornell's work has found application in cinematography. He received a Golden Globe nomination for The Keeper soundtrack to The Machine Gun Preacher. Chris was the author of soundtracks and their versions for the films Mission: Impossible-2 and Great Expectations.
The composition "You Know My Name" for the movie "Casino Royale" is the first time since 1983 that the name of a James Bond film does not coincide with the musical theme, and also the first in this series in 20 years with male vocals. The single "Live to Rise", which Soundgarden released after the reunion, appeared on the soundtrack to the blockbuster "The Avengers". The last solo release - "The Promise", which sounds in the "Promise" tape.
Chris is named the Greatest Rock Singer by Guitar World magazine and is ranked fourth on Hit Parader magazine's 100 Best Heavy Metal Vocalists of All Time. He is ranked ninth on Rolling Stone's "Best Leading Artists of All Time" list and 12th on MTV's "22 Greatest Voices in Music".
fact
Personal life
Cornell's first wife was manager Susan Silver. The couple split in 2004 despite the birth of their daughter, Lillian Jean. The only thing that the former spouses had to share was a collection of 15 guitars. Chris later said that the four-year legal battle ended in his favor.
Soon after the divorce, the musician married a second time to the Greek woman Vicki Karayannis. The wife was engaged in journalism. In the marriage, children were born - daughter Tony and son Christopher Nicholas.
In 2012, the couple established the Chris and Vicky Cornell Foundation to help the homeless and children with plight, which receives part of the proceeds from ticket sales.
