Biography
Chris Cooper spent his childhood at his father's ranch in Missouri. He first studied theater and agriculture at the local university. His first contact with the world of the stage consists of drawing and then building sets for a small local troupe. He then moved to New York, where he started out on the boards.
His film debut took place with Investigation of a Passion in 1980, a film by Nicholas Roeg in which he made a small appearance. But it was not until almost ten years and his meeting with filmmaker John Sayles that Chris Cooper turned definitively towards cinema. He will appear in four of the director's films: Matewan in 1987, then City of Hope, Lone star and finally Silver City in 2003.
Coming from a peasant background himself, Chris Cooper is in the credits of films set in rural areas, such as The Man Who Whispers in Horses' Ear, directed by Robert Redford, or October Sky, in which he embodies the father of Jake Gyllenhaal. This composition of authoritarian father is at the heart of his role as a die-hard military man in Sam Mendes' American beauty, in which the general public notices him.
He then plays other roles of irascible soldier, since he is lieutenant in Fous d'Irène, colonel in The Patriot, the road to freedom and ... lieutenant-colonel in Jarhead - the end of innocence, film in which he meets the director Sam Mendes. In 2002, his appearance in Adaptation of Spike Jonze gave him an Oscar. In 2006, Chris Cooper appeared in the credits of two major films: a political work inspired by real events (Syriana) and a prestigious biopic (Truman Capote).
Although a committed actor, Chris Cooper does not abandon action cinema. We find him in 2002 and 2004 in pursuit of Matt Damon in The Memory and Death in the Skin or as an FBI agent sent to Saudi Arabia in The Kingdom of Peter Berg, again alongside Jamie Foxx two years after Jarhead. In contrast, he joined the castings of two romantic comedies in the late 2000s: New York, I Love You and Remember Me; and lends his voice to Douglas, the funny bird of Max and the maximonsters of Spike Jonze (2009).
Chris Cooper doubles down with Ben Affleck in 2010. The cast stars in The Company Men and The Town, which Affleck is directing. Cooper also participates in The Tempest, a big-screen adaptation of Shakespeare's The Tempest by Julie Taymor.
