Biography
Born in Paris of Armenian parents, Charles Aznavour began, at the age of 9, to survey auditions and entered the Théâtre du Petit Monde. He then played the roles of children in the theater during the 1930s. He also appeared in various films. At the same time, he began his career as a singer, successively meeting the lyricist Pierre Roche and Edith Piaf who offered him his first trip to the United States.
Become a singer recognized on the Parisian stages such as the Olympia and the Alhambra, Charles Aznavour made his true debut in the cinema, in 1958, in La Tete contre les murs by Georges Franju and met Jean-Pierre Mocky with whom he would turn the film. The following year, Les Dragueurs and Les Vierges in 1963. In 1960, he found one of his most beautiful roles in Tirez sur le pianiste under the direction of François Truffaut. The success of the film in the United States then opened the doors to the famous Carnegie Hall in New York.
In the mid-1960s, he was truly recognized as a complete artist capable of acting, singing and performing at the same time. He was adored on stages all over the world and, in 1968, he made his first film in English: Candy by Christian Marquand with Marlon Brando, Richard Burton and James Coburn.
During the 1970s, he mainly toured in Anglo-Saxon productions, notably Les Aventuriers and Intervention Delta. He also participates in the first adaptation of the Ten Little Negroes in Colors, alongside Orson Welles and Gert Fröbe. In 1979, he also played in German, in The Drum by Volker Schlöndorff, which won the Oscar for best foreign film. A dramatic hero, he also shot Les Fantômes du chapelier in 1982, under the direction of Claude Chabrol, in the role of a crushed and reserved man.
In 1986, after having composed many music for his films since the mid-1950s and writing the dialogues for Les Intrus by Sergio Gobbi in 1972, he wrote the screenplay for Paul Boujenah's comedy, Yiddish Connection. In the 90s, he was more discreet in the cinema, mainly shooting TV movies.
In 2002, he played the main role of his most personal film: Ararat by Atom Egoyan on the Armenian genocide, before playing his own role in Take me away (2005), a sung comedy which pays homage to the singer. He died on October 1, 2018, at the age of 94.
