Biography
Chantal Akerman comes from a family of Jews who emigrated from Central Europe in the 1930s. Her grandparents and her mother were deported to Auschwitz. The vision of Pierrot le Fou is a revelation. She then enrolled at INSAS (Higher Institute of Arts, Entertainment and Diffusion Techniques). After a first short film, she emigrated to New York, where she became passionate about the experimental cinema of the American Jonas Mekas and the Canadian Michael Snow, whose influence is perceptible in the filmmaker's early productions. On site, she directed a short film and tried her hand at long format (Hotel Monterey, dedicated to a hotel for the needy in New York). Then, Chantal Akerman returns to France and devotes herself fully to cinema.
Written, directed and performed by Akerman, Je, tu, il, elle (1974) is a radical film, rejecting the effect, to which she prefers the fixed shot, the extreme slowness and the interior monologue. Critics note her third feature film, Jeanne Dielman 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Brussels (1975), which confirms the director's trends. For nearly 3h30, she distorts the durations and reduces the dialogue to a minimum. The film, which deals with the life of an occasional prostitute, marks her meeting with Delphine Seyrig, an actress whom she meets three times, notably for the musical Golden Eighties (1986).
While continuing her experiments in experimental documentaries (News from Home), Chantal Akerman directed her most academic film, Les Rendez-vous d'Anna (1978), with Aurore Clément in the lead role. Even if the form differs, the themes dear to the director remain: wandering and the search for origins. Akerman waits for 1996 and Un divan à New York (with William Hurt and Juliette Binoche) to approach again a more commercial cinema.
Alternating documentaries (Un jour Pina asked Pina Bausch, East, South, On the other side), and fiction films (All night, Night and Day), the Belgian filmmaker is pursuing a career between France and the States -Unis, where in 1988 she produced Histoires d'Amérique, a series of testimonies on Jewish emigration to the United States. In 2000,La Prisonnière by Marcel Proust with La Captive, which brings together Stanislas Mehrar and Sylvie Testud. After the documentary On the other side and the comedy-drama Demain on Déménage, the demanding Chantal Akerman signed, in 2006, Là-bas, a documentary on Israel. Some time later, she redirected Stanislas Mehrar in La Folie Almayer (2011), freely adapted from a novel by Joseph Conrad.
