Biography
It is undoubtedly one of the major figures of martial arts cinema which is disappearing. Born in China, from where he moved to Taiwan in the 1940s, Chang Cheh eventually settled in Hong Kong to become a director, after starting out as a scriptwriter at Shaw Studios. A great discoverer of kung fu stars, he was the one who helped the career of Bruce Lee and John Woo (who was his assistant and spiritual son).
Chang Cheh's "brand" is characterized by a fascinated and erotic use of blood (the characters open, contort, grimace and die in excruciating pain), by the reduced place of women (unlike the films of his contemporary King Hu), and by the frequent theme of virile (even crypto-homosexual) friendship.
The success of The One-armed swordsman (1966), in which the hero is a penguin, and then of its sequel The Tiger's Rage, sets the standards of a more ambitious wu xia pian (mandarin sword film). Under his leadership, budgets became more substantial, costumes and sets more beautiful, and films were now based on the literary tradition of the Chinese martial arts novel. This change in direction of the Hong Kong film industry continued for 15 years until the advent of the New Wave, led by a certain Tsui Hark.
The hegemony of the filmmaker was however already undermined in 1971 by Bruce Lee who imposed kung fu and his unarmed fights. Chang Cheh then finds the parade with Five Shaolin masters (1974) then Disciples of Shaolin (1975), where he stages real Chinese kung fu (unlike Bruce Lee who operated a synthesis of various Asian martial arts) .
Chang Cheh will remain as the father of two essential genres of martial arts cinema; the wu xia pian new way (including Tiger and Dragon is an avatar) and Shaolin kung fu (later updated by Jet Li).
