Carolina Costner was born on February 8, 1987 in the city of Bolzano in Italy. Of course, Carolina "got on skates before she learned to walk" - at the age of 4, she already tried to make the first pirouettes on ice. At first, the girl trained in her homeland, and in 2001 she left for Germany to study with the eminent coach Michael Hut.

Carolina Costner began her sports career in the 2000-2001 season and immediately succeeded - she became the winner of the Italian Junior Championship. At the age of 15, the skater began to take part in adult tournaments. Then she confirmed the title of champion of Italy, and at the world championship (although still among young athletes) she became a bronze medalist.

Then Carolina trains hard and begins to "gain momentum." From 2003 to 2005, she won two gold medals in the Italian championship, two bronzes: one at the world championship, and the other at the European, and silver at the Grand Prix stage.

The 2006-2007 season for Costner becomes triumphant: the already familiar gold in the Italian tournament and the first gold in the European Championship. In 2006, the XX Winter Olympic Games were held in Turin, Italy. Carolina was entrusted with an honorable mission - to carry the country's flag. It was also the first Olympics in a skater's career, but, unfortunately, the girl took only 9th place in the competition.

Ahead, the skater had many more victories and defeats. In the period from 2007 to 2009, 7 gold medals, 3 silver and 4 bronze medals are added to her piggy bank. Costner again becomes the champion of Europe and Italy and the winner of two stages of the Grand Prix. But there were also annoying defeats during these years: having won silver at the World Championship in 2007, the next year the skater makes mistakes during the performance and becomes only twelfth, and a year later - the sixth. At the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, Costner occupies an unusual 16th place in the ranking.

After unsuccessful performances at the Olympics and two consecutive world championships, Carolina decides to change her coach. Then the girl moves to California (USA) to skate under the guidance of Frank Carroll (mentor of Olympic and world champions Michelle Kwan and Evan Lysacek) and the famous figure skater Christy Fassi.

Having changed the environment and the team, in the 2010-2011 season, Carolina Costner rises to the third stage of the World Championship, the second - the European Championship and the first - the Italian tournament. The athlete also earns three medals for the Grand Prix stages: gold, silver and bronze.

A year later, Costner returns to his former coach in Germany. They put on new programs, hone jumps and spins, the goal is only prize-winning places in competitions. A super-complex cascade appears in Carolina's arsenal: triple flip - triple toe loop - double rittberger.

Carolina becomes world champion and once again wins the title of European champion. To the previous medals, the athlete is added 3 "silver" and 6 gold awards - it was a real triumph.

The main battle was ahead - the Olympic Games. In 2014, they were held in Russia, in the city of Sochi. After a disastrous performance in Vancouver, Costner lost hope for a prize, but confident victories in 2012 and 2013 again gave her faith in herself and her strength.

At the Olympic Games, Costner, without any mistakes, rolls back the short and free program with inspiration and with a total score of 216.73 takes the third step of the podium. The dream has come true - the Olympic medal has been received.

Athletes of such a high level sometimes do not have time for themselves and for building personal relationships, since they devote all their time to training, training camps and competitions. Nevertheless, already being an eminent figure skater, Carolina met Alex Schwarzer, an athlete and Olympic champion in race walking.

A couple of many years had a close relationship. If the Italian press published their joint pictures on the main spread, the circulation was sold out in the very first hours. As Carolina herself admits, she loved Alex and trusted him.

Costner recalls such a case: a young man was visiting her, then representatives of the anti-doping committee called her and said that they were looking for Schwarzer. Alex asked her to cheat and tell her that he was at home. The skater did just that, not seeing anything shameful in the act and not giving it much importance. A few months later, Alex Schwarzer was accused of doping and, as it turned out, was justified. The athlete did not deny anything, but he himself confessed everything: 

Everything would be fine, but Costner also "got it" - the skater was disqualified for 16 months. For the 28-year-old athlete, some of whose rivals on the ice have not yet celebrated their majority, this is a period that threatens to lose her athletic form and skills.

At that moment, as the figure skater admits, “the earth went out from under her feet”: she suddenly lost her beloved person, whom she could not forgive for betrayal (Schwarzer said that Costner had specially covered him), and the work of her whole life was sports.

As a real athlete and fighter, Karolina is a strong-willed and strong-willed girl. During the disqualification, she decided to turn the events in her favor. In an interview, Costner says that she was finally able to be alone with herself, to devote time to family and parents, and to chat with friends to her fullest. Over time, the skater even got a taste of the "free" life: instead of morning workout, she went to the cinema, and then went shopping with her friends.

Taking a breath, Costner realized that her love for figure skating was greater than for cute gatherings in cafes and an idle lifestyle. Then she got into training with the Russian coach Alexei Nikolaevich Mishin. He was the mentor of many famous athletes, among whom were Alexei Yagudin and (now he is) Evgeni Plushenko.

Carolina did not forget her head coach Michael Hut, but learning from Mishin was her old dream. Now the skater is studying with two mentors at once. The disqualification was removed from her ahead of schedule, and Costner began to prepare for new competitions in an enhanced mode.

In January 2018, the European Figure Skating Championship was held in Moscow. Carolina Costner also took part in it. After the break, the athlete had a hard time performing: in the free program there was an annoying fall and several mistakes. Nevertheless, the total score of 204.25 allowed her to take an honorable third place. The first and second places on the podium were taken by Russians Alina Zagitova and Evgenia Medvedeva.
