Budd Boetticher

Budd Boetticher was first a renowned boxer, American football star and matador before devoting himself to the cinema. He began his career in 1951, as a screenwriter, writing a script on an environment he knew well, bullfighting: The Lady and the Toreador. Then he devoted a very large part of his career to the westerns, the golden age of which was between the end of the 1940s and the beginning of the 1960s.

During this period he produced some of the most outstanding works of the genre including: The Traitor of Texas in 1952 with Robert Ryan, many films that marked his close collaboration with actor Randolph Scott and screenwriter and director Burt Kennedy, Seven men to shoot down (consecrated by many as certainly one of the best westerns ever made) in 1956, The Ride of Revenge in 1959 (where James Coburn made his debut), Comanche Station in 1960, as well as Buchanan rides alone with Craig Stevens in 1958.

Although apparently the western seems to have been his genre of predilection, the filmmaker is not limited to the latter. While the last sighs of the so-called "classic" western are announced, Boetticher changes his long gun to tackle the detective genre. In 1955, he directed the thriller, The killer has escaped, and in 1960 the majestic, La Chute d'un caid, a superb biography of a gangster.

Between 1960 and 1970, he almost disappeared from the film sets. He remains active nonetheless, making a documentary on his friend Carlos Arroza alias the "Mexican cyclone", a figure among the greatest matadors. The biography of the toreador occupied him for almost 7 years, and came out on screens in 1972.

He then did not regain the glory of the 1950s, although in 1970 he was the source of the screenplay for Don Siegel's hit film Sierra Torrid. In 1971, he closed his Western period with an epitaph film: Who shoots the first? where a young hero crosses the mythical old West while being attacked by all the legendary figures of the genre (Judge Roy Bean, Jesse James ...).

His very last film appearance, was as an actor as he did, he indeed plays Judge Nizetitch alongside Mel Gibson and Kurt Russell in Tequila Sunrise in 1988. Boetticher nicknamed, "the impossible Monsieur BB "), was appreciated and recognized for his framing, his direction of actors and his sense, nervous and effective, of the narration.
