Biography
It was from an early age that Brad Bird developed a passion for animation. After a first film completed at only thirteen, he was noticed by Disney and became the protégé of Milt Kahl, one of the studio's pioneers with big ears. Brad Bird then studied at the "California Institute of the Arts" from which he graduated. There he even meets a certain John Lasseter (destined to become the co-founder and CEO of Pixar) with whom he befriends.
After starting in animation dubbing, in 1979, for the second short film by the great Tim Burton entitled Doctor of Doom, Brad Bird became an animator on the Disney cartoon Rox and Rouky in 1981, then extended his activity to other Hollywood animation studios. He writes, directs and co-produces, for television, Family Dog, one of the episodes of Fantastic Stories produced by a certain Steven Spielberg. From there, Brad familiarized himself with making cartoons and animated films. He was then hired by 20th Century Fox to direct several episodes of Matt Groening's cult series, The Simpsons, then subsequently took on the costume of executive consultant for the series until 1998.
The year 1999 marks a new stage in Brad Bird's career. There, he directed his first animated feature, Le Geant de fer. Despite good press reviews, the film did not thrill the public and remained perceived as a failure for the filmmaker. In 2004, he moved up a gear by directing The Incredibles for Pixar studios. The adventures of Bob Paar alias Mister Indestructible and his family of superheroes earned him the Oscar for best animated film.
Riding on this success, he created, in 2005, a short film, Baby-sitting Jack-Jack, recounting the destiny of the youngest of this family with extraordinary powers. Impressed, Pixar executives rehired him in 2007 and entrusted him with the production of Ratatouille, an animated film featuring the adventures of a sewer rat aspiring to be the chef of a major Parisian restaurant. The Bird / Pixar collaboration has truly panicked international box office counters, with the tandem collecting more than a billion dollars in net profits!
After 4 years of absence, Brad Bird returns to the front of the stage in 2011 in a completely different genre, that of the action film. Paramount appointed him director for Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, blockbuster with a budget of $ 150 million and the 4th installment of the saga of the same name. For the occasion, he made his first real shots; something new for someone who is already considered one of the greatest geniuses in animation.
Having brilliantly succeeded in his baptism in the direction of actors "in the flesh", Brad Bird is entrusted in 2012 with the realization of the new episode of the Star Wars saga entitled The Awakening of the Force. But the American director prefers to decline the offer to carry out another project, In pursuit of tomorrow, inspired by the Tomorrowland theme parks of the various Disneyland parks. For this film, he engages established actors such as George Clooney and Hugh Laurie and gives his first major role to the young Britt Robertson.
Currently in the process of writing the second installment of his hit cartoon The Incredibles, Brad Bird is also working on the big screen adaptation of James Dallessandro's 1906 novel about the aftermath of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, always on behalf of Pixar studios.
