Biography
Bourvil, whose real name is André-Robert Raimbourg, owes its stage name to Bourville, a Norman village in which he settled at the age of three with his mother. As a teenager, he began to work as a baker, but he was more passionate about singing. He first took over Fernandel's repertoire on his own before composing songs of his own. Having gone to Paris with his wife, he took part in radio hooks on the eve of the Second World War, then, demobilized in 1940, he scoured the cabarets and also made himself known on Radio Luxembourg.
His first appearance in the cinema, he owes it to the film La Ferme du pendu (1945) by Jean Dréville, and especially to the song Les Crayonsthat he interprets there benoit. Very quickly, Bourvil will find himself confined to characters who are distinguished by their kindness, their good nature, even their naivety. This is notably the case in Le Passe-muraille (1951) and Le Trou normand (1952), comedies both directed by Jean Boyer, as well as in swashbuckling films where he can serve as a solid foil. : Les Trois Mousquetaires (1953), Cadet-Rousselle (1954), Le Bossu (1960) or Le Capitan (id.). But he is also capable of nice performances in reverse: petty and oppressive towards Michèle Morgan in Le Miroir à deux faces (1958), he is just as deceitful in Thénardier in Jean's version of Les Misérables (1957). -Paul Le Chanois.
In 1954, in Poisson d'avril, he made a decisive encounter in the person of Louis de Funès, an actor who is his diametrically opposed to the screen: authoritarian, angry, energetic. The two men will meet again for a cult scene in La Traversée de Paris, a feature film for which Bourvil won the Volpi Cup for best male interpretation at the Venice Film Festival in 1956, then in Le Corniaud (1964) and La Grande vadrouille. (1966), two huge successes of the popular comedy signed Gérard Oury. Even if their playing and their way of approaching their characters obey different tempos, the two actors appreciate each other enormously. To the point that Bourvil asked, despite a considerable difference in cachet with Louis de Funès, that the latter's name appears at the same level as his on the Corniaud poster. Fernandel, Lino Ventura and Jean-Paul Belmondo are also great playmates for the actor who rubs shoulders with them in turn on the sets of La Cuisine au Beurre (1963), Les Grandes gueules (1965) and Le Cerveau (1968).
Another personality with whom Bourvil is often associated: Jean-Pierre Mocky, renowned filmmaker and ace of the odds and ends. Under his direction, he plays roles that are at least original: A funny parishioner (1963) pillager of church trunks, an inspector tracking down an imaginary beast in La Grande Frousse (1964), an anti-TV teacher in La Grande lessive (1968) as well as a veterinarian coming to the aid of a neglected woman in L'Etalon (1969). At the start of the 1960s, Bourvil's popularity exceeded French borders, to the point where he was offered the possibility of joining the international cast of the Longest Day (1962) and giving the answer to American stars such as Henry Fonda (Secret War, 1965) or William Holden (The Christmas Tree, 1969).
It was at the end of the filming of Cracks (1968) that Bourvil learned that he had a form of hematological cancer, Kahler's disease. The last year of his life, he will deliver one of his finest performances, that of Commissioner Mattei, in Le Cercle rouge (1970) by Jean-Pierre Melville, and will be illustrated in Le Mur de l'Atlantique (id. ), a particularly difficult filming for the actor is subjected to regular injections of morphine. Bourvil died on September 23, 1970, notably his plans to find Louis de Funès and Gérard Oury for a costume comedy entitled… La Folie des grandeurs.
