fact
Childhood and youth
Blanca Vlašić was born on November 8, 1983 in Split, Croatia, into a sports family. Her mother Venera was a Croatian cross-country skiing champion and played basketball. Yoshko's father was engaged in decathlon. In 1983, he won the gold medal at the Mediterranean Games in the Moroccan city of Casablanca, the girl was named in honor of this victory.
The Vlašić family has four children: Blanca's older brother, Marin, is a former handball player, was fond of basketball and discus throwing, middle Luka studied physiotherapy, and the younger Nikola is a footballer of the Croatian national team and leading European clubs.
From an early age, the future champion joined sports, went to training with her father. At first, Blanca dreamed of becoming a sprinter, then she tried her hand at other athletics disciplines, and finally it became clear that, in terms of physical parameters, she was ideal for high jumps. The athlete's height is 193 cm, weight - 75 kg.
Josko Vlašić became the first coach of the promising daughter, who quickly reached the international high jumper standard. At the age of 15, Blanca set a personal record at a height of 1.8 m, and a year later she improved it to 1.93 m.
fact
High jump
Vlašić had an early start in international competitions: at the age of 17, she competed in the first youth world championship in athletics and finished 8th. Blanca became the first Croatian representative at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. The athlete was not ready for this level of competition, she did not get into the standings and returned to youth tournaments.
In 2000, Vlašić won the World Junior Athletics Championships, conquering the bar at a height of 1.91 m. She trained hard and hard, participated in qualifying competitions among professionals. In 2001, Blanca finished 6th at the world championship in Edmonton, and at the end of the year won the first gold medal among adults at the Mediterranean Games in Tunisia.
In July 2002, Vlašić won the junior world championship in Kingston, set a personal record by jumping 1.96 m.She was 9 cm ahead of her rivals.Inspired by the victory, Blanca tried to overcome the 2-meter height, she failed, but most importantly - the athlete retained the title. In the 2002 season finale, Blanca did not show high results, but entered the top 10 best high jumpers in the world rankings.
The beginning of 2003 was promising for the athlete: she set a new personal record of 1.98 m and took 4th place at the World Indoor Championships, won the 1st tournament of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) with a score of 1.99 m and, finally overcame the 2-meter bar at the Zagreb Grand Prix.
Vlašić took gold at the 2003 U23 European Athletics Championships, qualified for the World Championships and the IAAF final tournament. Despite the impressive results, the 2003 season was unsuccessful for the athlete. Blanca won a medal neither at the World Championships (7th place - 1.95 m) nor at the track and field final in Paris (4th place - 1.96 m)
The next year began with a bronze medal at the World Indoor Championships in Budapest. Vlašić regularly climbed the podium in outdoor tournaments, won the national championship, breaking the bar at a height of 2.03 m.Owing to this result, the jumper as part of the Croatian national team went to the 2004 Olympics in Athens, where she took 11th place in the final with a jump 1.89 m.
After such a defeat, Blanca was in a depressed state, psychological problems affected the athlete's health, doctors discovered that she had hyperthyroidism - a disease requiring surgery and subsequent treatment. In 2005, Vlašić took part in 2 tournaments: the Croatian national championship - she became the winner, and the world championship - did not make it to the final stage.
Blanca was able to fully recover by the 2006 season. She improved her indoor personal best to 2.05 m, and won silver at the World Championships held at the Olimpiyskiy Sports Complex in Moscow.
The 2006 European Athletics Championships in Gothenburg was a disappointment for Vlašić: she overcame 2.01 m but finished in 4th place. It was the best jump without a medal in history, bronze medalist Kaisa Bergkvist took the same height, but with fewer attempts. The Croatian athlete ended the season with a performance in the 2006 World Athletics Championships, but dropped out after the third jump, finishing in 6th place.
In the 2007 season, Vlašić won 18 of 19 outdoor events, her only defeat at the first IAAF Golden League tournament in Oslo against Russian Elena Slesarenko. Blanca won the World Championships in Osaka with 2.05 m, winning Croatia's first gold medal in world athletics. Vlašić was chosen as Athlete of the Year by the European Sports Association and journalists.
In March 2008, in Valencia, Blanca won the indoor world title for the first time. The Croatian went to the Olympics in Beijing in the status of a favorite. Unexpectedly for the fans and experts, Vlašić lost the gold to the Belgian athlete Tia Hellebaut, who conquered the height of 2.05 m, and became the silver medalist of the competition.
The Croatian returned to competitive practice in 2013. She won several stages of the IAAF league, prepared for the World Championships in Moscow, in which she did not participate due to incomplete tendon restoration.
In 2015, Vlašić participated in some international competitions, which she finished outside the podium. Success returned to the Croatian at the 2015 World Championships in Beijing. After what happened in the biography of the athlete over the past couple of years, the silver medal won in the fight against the Russians Maria Kuchina and Anna Chicherova was equivalent to gold.
Tendon problems continued to plague Blanca. In 2016, she underwent another operation and almost did not participate in the tournaments of the season. However, she got into the Croatian national team to participate in the 2016 Summer Olympics.
On August 18, 2016, Vlašić won bronze at the London Games and became the seventh female athlete in the history of high jumping (since 1928) to win two Olympic medals. In 2017, she refused to participate in the world series due to health problems, but she did not say that she was planning to end her career.

The jumper does not live in her parents' house, but she did not leave her hometown of Split. She trains in the Joker gym, which was built especially for her by a Croatian businessman.
In between the competitions, Vlašić took part in several photo shoots in different looks.
To overcome her depression, Blanca converted to Catholicism in 2013, she opposed same-sex marriage.
On Instagram, athletes have a lot of photos from training, competitions and official ceremonies.
