Bertris Williams was born in Manhattan on December 9, 1937. The girl's parents - David Williams and Doris Steen (nee) - worked in the broadcast business department. The couple named their daughter after their grandfather, who passed away shortly before the birth of their granddaughter.
It is difficult to imagine that the future "main lady of lust", as the writer was nicknamed by the magazine "Romantic Times", was trained and thought about a career as a novelist at St. Mary's School for Girls under the guidance of a nun of the Church of England.
Before becoming a nun, the teacher of the school, sister Mercedes, bore the name Ivy Mae Bolton in the world. As it turned out, she turned out to be the girl's favorite author. In 1980, during an interview with The New York Times, Bertrice recalled her sister Mercedes with gratitude.
The nun listened attentively and reacted with understanding to the first literary experience of the 13-year-old pupil. Despite her attempts to display literary talent during her school years, Mrs Small's career as a professional writer began in adulthood. In 1978, Avon Book published the author's first historical love story, Harem.
The source of inspiration for the plot of the novel was a family legend told to the writer while studying in college by one of her classmates. Friend Bertris came from Turkey, and the girl's grandmother visited the last sultan's harem. Of course, the woman shared stories and memories with her granddaughter, and she told the experience of the former concubine of the Sultan to her friend.
Bertrice recalls that since her classmate did not know the details of the story and only remembered some of her grandmother's stories, the rest of the plot of the book is a figment of the writer's imagination. Small had been hatching the idea of a novel for years, but she always knew that sooner or later she would definitely put events on paper.
Writing the novel lasted for two years, and for another year the work was rewritten, corrections and corrections were made. Not surprisingly, hard work has borne fruit - the book was warmly received by readers and quickly sold out from the shelves.
This was followed by a series of romance novels with a subtle touch of historicity. The books were published in series, winning the hearts of not only American fans, but also being reprinted in hundreds of languages of the world.
