Son of Attilio Bertolucci, poet and film critic, Bernardo Bertolucci was offered at the age of fifteen a 16 mm camera with which he made his first short films. Change of scenery for his two following feature films: the Sahara for Un thé au Sahara (1990), the adaptation of Paul Bowles' novel, and Tibet for Little Buddha (1993), a fresco in which Keanu Reeves plays the title role.

The Italian director then returns to his roots with Stolen Beauty (1995), a dramatic comedy set in Tuscany and illuminated by the sweet face of female revelation Liv Tyler. Four years after Shandurai (1999) played by Thandie Newton, he returned to a certain left-wing ideal by directing The Dreamers (2003), a drama on the revolutionary effervescence of May 1968.
