In 2005, beginning to experiment with form, Bernardine combined theater scripts, essays and poetry in fiction and, thanks to the British publishing house Penguin, published the book Soul Tourists, which told about the difficult life of an African American couple.

In April 2009, critics got acquainted with the author's new work, which became the prose novel Blonde Roots. In it, Evaristo turned everything upside down and created an alternative story in which white people were slaves, and Africans held a whip.

The use of satirical imagery and the boldness of the British writer amazed literary scholars and readers and won a number of prestigious awards. The book received a nomination for the International IMPAC Award in Dublin and won recognition at the Women's Prize for Fiction and Arthur C. Clarke Award.

At the same time, a revised edition of the early autobiographical novel “Lara” appeared, where the action took place over 150 years. Bernardine described the childhood of her own great-grandfathers, grandfathers and parents, who, despite mixed marriages, lived happily and had authority.

Then, replenishing her own bibliography with extraordinary works of art, the writer, together with the Penguin publishing house, published the book "Hello, Mom". This novel about English gangs was written in the epistolary genre and, adapted for radio shows, entered a number of educational programs.

In the 2010s, after gaining fame as an author, Evaristo edited magazines, making a special issue of Black Britain. In addition, she has worked on an anthology collection of African American poets and in parallel has published a book called Mr Loverman.

In 2019, Bernardine shared the Booker Prize for the new novel Girl, Woman, Other with Canadian Margaret Atwood. This work is now on the must-read list in the UK and is rated as an outstanding work of writing by critics and literary scholars.
