Biography

Arthur Clarke, along with writers Isaac Asimov and Robert Highline, was one of the "big three" of science fiction as the owner of a number of literary prizes. The author of fiction and journalistic works was a futurologist and inventor who tried to get ahead of history and predict the events of new centuries.

Childhood and youth

The biography of Arthur Charles Clarke began in December 1917 in a British city called Minehead, located within the boundaries of Somerset County. Then his parents rented a farm in a village rich in attractions, and the boy grew up free, not knowing the needs, hardships and troubles.

From morning to night, the future writer walked through the picturesque surroundings, examining the stones on the roads, trees, shrubs and flowers. His ideas about the world around him before entering school from the point of view of educated adults were unpretentious and simple.

Young Clark's favorite pastime was studying the night sky, which was clearly visible from the roof of the house where he lived as a child. In clear weather, an inquisitive boy counted the brightest stars or watched the chaotic movement of unnamed stars that had not yet been discovered.

In addition, the child collected cards depicting extinct dinosaurs, and then began collecting fossils found in the surrounding fields and forests. Due to the objects that regularly replenished the piggy bank, Arthur enjoyed authority with his peers and had no shortage of friends at an early age.

Additional points of popularity were brought by a fascination with science fiction, because the boy could colorfully retell what he had read the day before. Seeing this, the parents began subscribing to Amazing Stories, which featured authors such as H.G. Wells and Austin Hall.

After Olaf Stapledon's The Last and First Men, David Lasser's books appeared, popular in the 1930s. The boy reveled in fictional events created by talented Americans, and talked about flights to other galaxies in super-complicated spaceships.

The sudden death of the head of the family returned Arthur from heaven to earth, and he decided to graduate with excellent marks in order to support his mother in the future. But when the bitterness of loss disappeared, he entered the astronomical society and, becoming its active member, continued to fantasize and dream.

Unfortunately, life on earth required some kind of practical profession, and Clark traveled to the UK capital to join the adult community. But while working as an auditor for a financial firm, he became a member of the National Interplanetary Society, which was an active promoter of advanced scientific ideas.

Personal life

Having become an adult independent person, at first Clark did not think about his personal life, because the Second World War attracted all the attention of society. But in the 1950s, the Englishman met a woman whose name was later recognized by the whole country, fascinated by literature.

American Marilyn Mayfield was an attractive young lady, so a whirlwind romance began between her and Arthur. Three weeks after the first date, a modest wedding took place in New York, and the news of the new status of the writer immediately crossed the ocean.

The happiest time for the newlyweds was their honeymoon in Pennsylvania, where Clark was working on another book, and the chosen one enjoyed the views of the mountains. But then the author of science fiction got so deeply into literary creativity that he stopped showing old feelings and provoked family discord.

Acquaintances claimed that Arthur wanted to become a parent after marriage, but this turned out to be impossible due to Marilyn's specific illness. The couple parted by mutual agreement without scandals and proceedings, and the writer until the end of his life entered the circle of single men.

Books

Literary creativity, along with science, was an integral part of Clark's life. He became the author of more than two dozen works that brought recognition and prizes. Reviews of the debut story "Loophole", published in a science fiction magazine, became the first and most valuable reward for honestly invested effort.

In subsequent works, acquired by the editors of Astounding Science Fiction, Arthur decided on the style and began to hone his skills. He managed to reach the top in the novels "Earthly Light", "The End of Childhood", "Moon Dust", "City and Stars", as well as "Great Depth".

In the scientific book "Features of the Future" the science fiction writer formulated Clark's laws, which he adhered to in his own activities for ten years. They were used in the creation of novels, in the filming of shows and documentaries, and in the formulation of vital questions, which were subsequently answered.

In the 50s, the science fiction writer and his friend settled on the territory of Sri Lanka, where he was professionally engaged in diving and exploration of underwater depths. Subsequently, describing the lost in the usual fascinating and understandable form, Clarke drew several dozen vivid pictures for readers.

In the late 1960s, the whole world started talking about the Briton after the screenplay "A Space Odyssey", brought to life by Stanley Kubrick. The success of the film adaptation, which acquired a philosophical connotation thanks to the director, inspired the author with faith in creativity, hope for the future and optimism.

In the 1980s, a work that reflected the history of mankind formed the basis of a literary cycle, which consisted of four volumes. And then the novels of the new series "Date with Rama" and "Garden of Rama" appeared, the writing of which the Englishman gave hundreds of restless sleepless hours.

A decade before his death due to dysfunction of the body, Arthur resorted to the help of other writers when creating a number of works. His bibliography was supplemented by the books "Solar Storm" and "The Eye of Time", published in Great Britain and America in the mid-2000s.

Death

In the 1960s, Clark got sick with polio, so he was confined to a wheelchair for the rest of the years. Despite this, the scientist and writer actively communicated with numerous colleagues and rejoiced like a child when people finally thought of creating the Internet.

In the 2000s, Arthur's photo and video messages appeared on the Web, timed to coincide with significant events and the publication of new works. In the last entry, the man said goodbye to fans and like-minded people, because he felt that a sad outcome would soon come.

On March 19, 2008, the cause of death of Arthur Clarke was the defeat of the respiratory system, which was caused by post-polio syndrome. Family members, friends and relatives flew to the territory of Sri Lanka to honor the memory of the great Englishman and participate in the funeral ceremony.
