Biography

Aram Khachaturian is a Soviet composer of Armenian origin, author of the ballets "Spartacus", "Gayane", the musical suite "Masquerade".

Aram was born on June 6, 1903 in the village of Kojori near the capital of Georgia. Soon the family moved to Tiflis. Father Yeghiy (Ilya) Khachaturian was a craftsman, owner of a bookbinding workshop. Having married a fellow villager with whom he had been engaged since childhood, Ilya moved from his native village of Upper Aza, on the border with Iran, to central Georgia.

Mother Kumash Sarkisovna was 10 years younger than her husband and was engaged in housekeeping. The family had five children - daughter Ashkhen and sons Vaginak, Suren, Levon, Aram, but the girl died in infancy.

The mother loved to sing Armenian songs, and the younger son Aram played along with her on everything that came to hand: pots or copper basins. The zeal for music was not welcomed in the family, the father strove to give all his sons a good education, so Aram was soon assigned to the private gymnasium of Princess Argutinskaya-Dolgorukova. As a child, the boy easily mastered, in addition to his native language, Georgian and Russian languages.

The atmosphere of the streets and alleys of the multicultural city was saturated with musical sounds that poured from everywhere. The Branch of the Russian Musical Society regularly received Fyodor Chaliapin, Sergei Rachmaninov, Konstantin Igumnov. The Italian Opera House operated in Tiflis. The boy involuntarily absorbed the melodies and rhythms of different peoples living in the capital of Georgia. When his father bought an old piano, Aram learned to select songs.

In 1921, Aram's older brother Suren, who at that time was already living in Moscow, came to Tiflis for the summer. After studying at Moscow University as a historian, the young man got a job at the Moscow Art Theater. Suren closely communicated with the founders of the Russian theater: Stanislavsky, Nemirovich-Danchenko, Sulerzhitsky, Vakhtangov and Mikhail Chekhov. Fired up with the idea of creating a national Armenian theater, Suren came to his homeland to look for talented compatriots to study in Moscow. Together with the theatergoers, Surena's brothers Levon and Aram went to the capital of Russia.

In Moscow, young men immersed themselves in the cultural life of the city: they attended opera, ballet, performances of symphony orchestras, drama performances. Aram was greatly impressed by the poet Vladimir Mayakovsky. A year later, Khachaturian entered the biological faculty of the university, but his love for music took its toll: the young man also began to attend the Gnesins' music school, in which the composition department was just being created. The first teacher of Khachaturian was Mikhail Fabianovich Gnesin, the meeting with whom determined the creative biography of the young man.

Music

Khachaturian, who started studying music theory and musical notation too late, had a very difficult time at first. At the school, Aram, in addition to the piano, mastered playing the cello. The very first attempts at writing music were successful: "Dance for Violin and Piano" is still included in the treasury of the violin repertoire. After graduating from college, in 1926, Aram went to his homeland, where he headed the music department of the Moscow House of Culture.

In 1929, Khachaturian returned to Moscow, where he entered the Moscow Conservatory in the class of the composer Nikolai Yakovlevich Myaskovsky. Instrumentation was taught to Khachaturian by Reingold Glier and Sergey Vasilenko. During these years, Aram created a suite for viola and piano, piano "Toccata", "Seven Fugues for Piano". The trio for piano, violin and clarinet was highly appreciated by Sergei Prokofiev, who staged the premiere of this work in Paris. In 1933, the “Dance Suite” was performed by the symphony orchestra on the stage of the Moscow Conservatory.

The composer's diploma work was the First Symphony. After graduating from graduate school in 1936, Khachaturian created the First Piano Concerto, which immediately entered the repertoire of the Soviet pianist Lev Oborin. In his works, Aram combines the oriental flavor of harmony and melody with Western European musical traditions. The works of Aram Khachaturian were performed by Soviet musicians D. Oistrakh, L. Kogan, M. Polyakin, Y. Flier, foreign performers W. Capell, A. Rubinstein.

In the pre-war years, Aram Khachaturian was appointed deputy chairman of the Union of Composers of the USSR. He writes the ballet "Happiness", the First Violin Concerto, music to the drama "Masquerade" by Mikhail Lermontov and the comedy "Valencian Widow" by Lope de Vega. The waltz from the "Masquerade" suite has become one of the best symphonic music pieces of the 20th century.

During the war, Aram Khachaturian was evacuated to Perm, where he composed the ballet "Gayane", the brightest numbers of which were "Lullaby" and "Dance with Sabers". The musician composes "Symphony with Bells", patriotic works "Song of Captain Gastello" and the march "To the Heroes of the Patriotic War." The composer's music is broadcast on the All-Union Radio. The work of Khachaturian was rightfully appreciated by the Soviet government, having awarded the composer the Stalin Prize of the 1st degree. At the end of the war, the score of the "Anthem of Armenia" appears from the pen of the master. In 1946 Aram Khachaturian completed the First Cello Concerto, a year later - the Third Symphony.

In 1948, Aram Khachaturian experienced a shock after the publication of a Politburo resolution, in which his work, as well as the music of Shostakovich and Prokofiev, were called formalism. After the attacks of the party, the master's first major work, the ballet "Spartacus", appeared only in 1954. Since the mid-50s, ballet has firmly entered the repertoire of many theater groups in the USSR and abroad. Performances were staged to the music of Khachaturian by the Soviet ballet masters L. Yakobson, I. Moiseev, Y. Grigorovich.

Since the beginning of the 50s, Aram Khachaturian has been taking the first course in composition at the Moscow Conservatory and at the Gnessin Institute. Aram Ilyich raised the venerable Soviet composers Andrei Eshpai, Rostislav Boyko, Alexey Rybnikov, Mikael Tariverdiev, Mark Minkov, Vladimir Dashkevich. Arno Babajanyan, Alexander Harutyunyan and Edward Mirzoyan enjoyed his support.

Aram Khachaturyan conducted and toured major centers of the Soviet Union, Europe and America. The composer wrote music for the films "Admiral Ushakov", "Giordano Bruno", "Othello", "Battle of Stalingrad". In the 60s, rhapsody concerts for violin, cello, and piano appeared in succession; in the 70s, the composer created a number of sonatas for string instruments.

Aram Ilyich Khachaturian was married twice. From his first marriage, he left a daughter, Nune, who received a musical education and devoted her life to pianistic activity. The first union did not last long. In 1933, Aram Khachaturian, being divorced, married his classmate Nina Vladimirovna Makarova for the second time.

In the second marriage, the only son of the composer, Karen, was born, who later became a famous art critic. The relationship between Aram Khachaturian and Nina Makarova is the subject of a TV movie from the “More than Love” series, in the creation of which the testimonies of relatives and photos from the family archive were used.
