Angela Bassett was born in New York and raised in Florida. She studied comedy for many years at the Yale School of Drama, from where she graduated. It was on the boards of Broadway and television sets that she began her career. Between 1985 and 1990, she was very present in numerous television series and television films.

She made her film debut in 1990, alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger in A Kindergarten Cop. Subsequently, she participated in John Singleton's first film Boyz'n the Hood, The Law of the Street, and collaborated twice with the director John Sayles with City of Hope in 1991 and Passion Fish in 1992. Then, it was sees in many supporting roles, until the film which highlights her, Tina by Brian Gibson, a biography of Tina Turner (1993), where she plays the famous singer. This role brought her some notoriety and allowed her to land a nomination for the Oscar for Best Actress and win the Golden Globe for Best Actress for a Musical or Comedy, thus becoming the first black woman to obtain this award.

She then works with Wes Craven, who gives her one of the two central roles in the fantasy comedy A Vampire in Brooklyn. She also holds the female lead role in Strange Days produced in 1995 by James Cameron and directed by Kathryn Bigelow. On television, we often see her in the skin of characters of very important women in the American black community: from Katherine Jackson to the wife of Martin Luther King in Betty and Coretta (2013) via Rosa Parks. In the movies, she took on the role of Malcolm X's wife Betty Shabazz twice in Spike Lee's film Malcolm X, in 1992 and in Panther, in 1995.

In the early 2000s, following the failures of Supernova and The Score, two big-budget films in which she was one of the headliners, the actress experienced a clear loss of notoriety and appeared, during this decade, in minor films (Sunshine State in 2002, Masked and Anonymous in 2003, Mr. 3000 in 2004, Notorious BIG in 2008) or TV films (Sous Haute Tension). Angela also plays in a recurring way in the last season of Emergencies, where she turns with Courtney B. Vance, her husband in the city, who plays her husband in the series.

In 2011, she appeared in Martin Campbell's Green Lantern, and the following year, in the romantic action comedy Target. In 2013, she joined star actors Gerard Butler, Morgan Freeman and Aaron Eckhart in the cast of the action film The Fall of the White House.
