Andrey Shmalko

Andrey Valentinov is a Ukrainian science fiction writer who writes in a unique format, weaving historical facts and fantastic heroes in his works. In addition, he is a scientist, archaeologist, teacher, and publicist.

The real name of the writer is Andrei Valentinovich Shmalko. The boy was born on March 18, 1958 in Kharkov. His great-grandmother was the sister of the famous silent film actress Vera Kholodnaya. At the age of 7, he went to the 1st grade. At school I studied in a rocket modeling circle, my favorite subjects were literature and chemistry. Shmalko skied a lot and attended the swimming section.

Even as a child, Andrei became interested in writing and in the 8th grade he wrote a fantastic story, according to the plot of which Soviet schoolchildren got to medieval England. Then he tried himself in poetry, novels, but he was drawn more to science fiction.

In 1980, the guy graduated from the history faculty at Kharkov University, and later defended his Ph.D. thesis. Even in his youth, he became interested in archeology, when, during a vacation in the Crimea, in Chersonesos, he found an expedition. Andrey was fond of this hobby for many years.

After the collapse of the USSR, the writer decided to start publishing his works. In 1995, the first book "The Criminals" was published. She also entered a little later in the epic novel The Eye of Power: The Third Trilogy (1991–1992), which tells about the events of perestroika. The author himself defines his genre as a cryptohistory, because he tells about the past in a fiction format.

Valentinov's work was influenced by his attitude to politics. In the 90s, he participated in the overthrow of the Soviet regime in his hometown, which he now regrets, talking about it in an interview.

In 1997, a new novel, The Cleric of Auverne, was published. The plot of the work is set in France in the 12th century. Cardinal Orsini assigns three brothers-monks - Guillaume, Peter and Anselm - to investigate the case of witchcraft in County Foix. The story is told from the perspective of Brother Guillaume. In the period from 1996 to 1997, a lot of material was printed, which lay for several years.

Andrey's bibliography contains novels, such as "Rubezh" and "Pentacle", written in collaboration with Dmitry Gromov, Oleg Ladyzhensky, Marina and Sergei Dyachenko. Valentinov considers such tandems useful for writers and says that he was able to learn a lot from colleagues.
