Andrey Gennadievich Karlov is a talented Russian diplomat who has made a great contribution to the implementation of Russian foreign policy.

Andrey Karlov was born in Moscow on February 4, 1954. Today we can say with confidence that this was a bright representative of a real diplomatic dynasty. Andrei's grandfather began his career at the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs back in 1922. By the time the younger Karlov was born, his father also worked there. As a student, Karlov devoted an enormous amount of time to studying Korea. The language of this country became for him the second foreign language after English. Against this background, the appointment of Andrei Gennadievich as an assistant of the Soviet Embassy in the DPRK immediately after graduating from the institute in 1976 looked quite logical. There he began his brilliant career.

During his service in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Andrey Gennadievich Karlov worked in strategically important positions in the Central Office:

from 1976 to 1981 and from 1984 to 1990 he was an employee of the embassy in the DPRK; from 1992 to 1997 he lived and worked in the Republic of Korea as an embassy counselor; from 2001 to 2007, he served as the extraordinary ambassador of the Russian Federation to the DPRK; from 2009 to 2013 he was the director of the Consular Department, simultaneously acting as a member of the collegium of the Russian Foreign Ministry; in 2013, by presidential decree, he was sent to the Republic of Turkey as the head of the diplomatic mission.

Unfortunately, Turkey became the last place of work - on December 19, 2016, a Russian diplomat was killed in Ankara.

Personal life was no less successful. With his wife Maria Mikhailovna, Karlov created a strong family, raised a son, whom he named Gennady in honor of his father. Today Gennady Andreevich is a former graduate of MGIMO and works as a secretary of the consular section of the Russian Embassy in the DPRK.

Colleagues and friends remember Karlov as a loyal friend and sympathetic person. He developed especially trusting and close relations with the family of Alexander Matsegor, an adviser to the Russian embassy in the DPRK. The latter even witnessed the wedding of a married couple in Pyongyang's Trinity Church in 2016.

The murder of Andrei Karlov became one of the most resonant - the ambassador was shot in front of many people, under the lenses of several dozen cameras. Even before the start of the investigation, the video of the violent crime quickly spread across the Internet and the media.

The tragedy occurred at a solemn event dedicated to the opening of the Art Center in the Turkish capital. The assassin, Mevlut Mert Altintash, who had previously served in the Turkish police, suddenly drew his pistol and shot in the back of the speaking diplomat.

According to the testimony of the guards, the one who killed Karlov entered the celebration with a police certificate. Therefore, it did not arouse any suspicions among the inspectors. Before the shot, the assassin shouted out several sentences in pure Turkish and a few words in broken Arabic. The essence of the statements boiled down to the fact that this act was Russia's revenge for Aleppo.

After the fatal shots, the criminal fired several more times into the hall, having managed to wound three visitors to the opening exhibition. After some time, the special forces fighters managed to shoot the attacker. The terrorist group ISIS claimed responsibility for the crime.

For Andrey Karlov, the shots fired by the terrorists' accomplice became fatal. The same evening, he died in Ankara Central Hospital. The funeral took place at the Khimki cemetery in Moscow.

Andrey Karlov's numerous awards include the Order of Seraphim of Sarov, which he received on August 13, 2006, and the title of Hero of the Russian Federation, which was posthumously bestowed on him by President Vladimir Putin.
