Profile:
Before starting his career as a filmmaker as a screenwriter in Entrée des artistes by Marc Allégret (1938), André Cayatte distinguished himself in a completely different profession: law. It was also during a lawsuit opposing a producer to a movie star that Maître Cayatte decided to drop the dress to embark on the seventh art. His first film as a director, The False Mistress (adapted from the work of Balzac), demonstrates his real care in staging. He will then decline justice from different angles: questioning first of all in Justice is done - his hour of glory -, pleading against the death penalty for We are all assassins, magistracy in crisis in Le dossier noir, or again the pangs of cosmetic surgery for The Two-Sided Mirror.
