Anatoly Vladimirovich was born in Abkhazia in September 1958 in the family of a kindergarten teacher and a machinist. A year later, the Kotenevs left Sukhumi and settled in the Stavropol Territory, in Nevinnomyssk.

In childhood, the artist dreamed of becoming a sailor, later fantasies about the expanses of water were replaced by the desire to conquer the heavenly element. And in the 7th grade, Tolya suddenly became interested in the stage. At the local Palace of Culture, a miniature theater worked, where the young man was frequent. After leaving school, Kotenev, at the insistence of his father, decided to get a serious male profession - he learned to be a turner-borer, worked at a factory. However, the craving for art has not disappeared. Anatoly entered the theater school in Sverdlovsk on the first try. After the 1st year he was drafted into the army. After serving in the Urals, he went to implement ambitious plans to conquer the capital.

Moscow reciprocated the ambitious guy immediately. VGIK and Shchukinskoe withstood the pressure of Kotenev. However, he made his way to the Moscow Art Theater School, on the course of Mikhail Tarkhanov, studied with Igor Vernik and Sergei Garmash.

The lack of a residence permit did not allow the young man to get a job in a Moscow theater, so Anatoly left for Minsk at the invitation of the Film Actor's Studio Theater.

Kotenev's film career began as a student. In his last year, the actor made his debut in the film "The Unknown Soldier." Then he was entrusted with the main role in the film "Sailor Zheleznyak". This film about a civil war hero was released in 1985 and received high ratings.
