On the night of September 9-10, 1972, billions of people around the world watched intensely the final of the Summer Olympics basketball tournament. The battle between the teams of the USSR and the USA was a real action-packed thriller, and there was more at stake than gold medals.

The famous sportsman from Kazakhstan Alzhan Zharmukhamedov also took part in that difficult tournament. 45 years after that difficult night, 73-year-old Alzhan Musurbekovich with trepidation attended the film premiere of the film by Russian director Anton Megerdichev "Moving Up", dedicated to the legendary match. The Olympic champion, medalist of the 1976 Olympic Games remembered sports victories and defeats in his life and again plunged into the events of bygone days.

Alzhan Musurbekovich Zharmukhamedov was born in the small village of Tavaksay (the territory of modern Uzbekistan) on October 2, 1944. The settlement was located in Kazakhstan, in close proximity to the border with Uzbekistan and in the middle of the twentieth century was transferred to the Uzbek Republic. Musurbek Zharmukhamedov was from Kazakhstan, and Praskovya Zharmukhamedova was from Russia. The athlete tries not to talk about his family and childhood in interviews with media representatives.

Alzhan led the way of life of an ordinary Soviet boy, went to school and did not think of any sports career. In the ninth grade, the young man went on a school trip to Tashkent, where he was noticed by the coach of the student basketball team. The guy liked him tall. This is how Alzhan got acquainted with basketball.

Nevertheless, the young man was still far from the world of big sports. After graduating from school, he worked in the small Uzbek town of Chirchik at a factory. However, the sporting successes and persuasions of the coach did their job - Zharmukhamedov left his job and entered the Tashkent Institute of Physical Education. Then, in 1963, the young man seriously took up basketball, playing first for the student team, and then for the Tashkent SKA.

At the matches for SKA Zharmukhamedov's achievements were noticed by other coaches and began to lure the promising basketball player to Burevestnik (Alma-Ata, Kazakhstan). While the clubs could not decide among themselves where the athlete should play, CSKA Moscow signed a contract with Alzhan, and the young man moved to the capital. At the same time, the successful Zharmukhamedov became a member of the USSR national basketball team.

Alzhan's first significant achievement was winning the European Championship in 1967. The performance at the world championship three years later became less successful: the team took only third place in the overall ranking.

Alzhan Musurbekovich does not like to devote others to the details of his personal life, it is only known that he is married and has two sons in marriage - Vladislav and Sergey, who are also passionate about basketball. In his free time, Zharmukhamedov reads books, visits cinemas and exhibitions. Despite his venerable age, the basketball player carefully monitors his appearance, which is confirmed by the numerous photos of the athlete posted on the Internet.

After retiring from basketball, Alzhan Zharmukhamedov worked as a coach in the Soviet troops stationed in Germany, and then returned to Kazakhstan, where he trained athletes from SKA.

In the 2000s, the former basketball player worked as a coach in the children's and youth basketball section, which he himself created. However, Zharmukhamedov put aside his work and personal affairs in order to attend the premiere of the sports drama "Moving Up" directed by Anton Megerdichev. The role of Alzhan Zharmukhamedov in the film was played by the actor Alexander Ryapolov. Alzhan Musurbekovich came to the cinema accompanied by his wife. For 2 hours, which the film lasted, the couple remembered in great detail the fateful night of September 9-10, 1972.

In an interview with representatives of the Russian media, Zharmukhamedov said that, despite the distortion of a number of facts, he liked the film. In addition, according to Alzhan Musurbekovich, he seemed to have plunged back into the events of those days. Having played such a difficult match, the Russian athletes could not find out the results of the match until lunch the next day. The players were nervous, worried, could not even sleep. Only at 13:00 on September 10, 1972, the guys learned that they had become Olympic champions.

A number of curious facts from the drama did take place in that match. Alzhan Zharmukhamedov's lens really flew out in one of the matches, as shown in the film, but this happened after the Olympics. Alzhan played with glasses for a long time due to vision problems, but often at the height of the game, the glasses fell, broke and the athlete could no longer continue the match. 

Then the coach found the athlete a good ophthalmologist who made custom contact lenses. It turned out to be much more convenient to play in the lenses, although they sometimes got lost directly on the court. Sometimes the referee even stopped the match, and the guys were looking for the lost lens together, later Alzhan got an extra set.

And after winning the Olympics, Russian athletes were in trouble at customs, which Anton Megerdichev also reflected in the film. It happened on June 7, 1973. During the customs inspection, the personal belongings of basketball players, including Alzhan Zharmukhamedov, turned out to be weapons. 

Considering that the athletes' luggage was stored in the United States Basketball Federation for a month, it was suggested that the leadership of the US team wanted to take revenge on the Russians for the defeat in the final match of the basketball tournament at the Olympic Games in 1972. In an interview, Alzhan Musurbekovich said that he knew who exactly planted the weapon, but did not want to talk about this topic.

This unpleasant situation has something in common with another case from the life of Zharmukhamedov. For achievements in the field of sports, Alzhan Musurbekovich was awarded the title of master of sports of international class. In 1970, CSKA Moscow played in Paris, and given the shortage of imported goods in the USSR, athletes were bringing home clothes and other things from abroad. 

In particular, Alzhan bought French shirts in quantities exceeding the norms allowed for import. Then the sports title was removed from Zharmukhamedov for violating the customs regime. But the next year, after winning the continental championship, the title was returned.

Despite political intrigues, health problems and age, Alzhan Musurbekovich never parted with sports. Now Zharmukhamedov works as a coach at school number 2107 in Moscow, where he teaches children and adolescents the subtleties of playing basketball. And on weekends, the athlete plays in friendly basketball veteran matches and is said to still give much younger players a head start.
