The Soviet-Spanish actor Algis Arlauskas glorified the role of Kostya Lukov in the film "Sportloto-82", but he is also known as a director and screenwriter of documentaries on social themes, a laureate of prestigious film awards. The full name of the artist is Algis Iozasovich Arlauskas. He was born on August 7, 1957 in Moscow. His father was Lithuanian by nationality, and his mother Carmen Pinedo was Spanish, the daughter of a revolutionary who was evacuated from her hometown of Bilbao in 1937 with her sisters. In the USSR, Maria received a post in the Communist Party, and later went to work as a translator.

Little Algis began to show his artistic ability early, skillfully imitating famous performers and favorite cartoon characters. He received a Soviet upbringing, grew up on the works of Russian literature and theater, but at home his family members spoke Spanish. Arlauskas considers himself a Russian, a Muscovite, and his second homeland is Spain.

The first experience of working in cinema happened to Algis long before receiving a theater education. The boy was only 4 years old when his parents brought him to the casting at Mosfilm. There, Georgy Danelia's assistant listened attentively to the young artist, who recited a poem about carrots, and approved him for shooting in a small episode of the film "The Way to the Pier". Unfortunately, this scene was cut out during editing.

The first serious work for Algis appeared at the age of 16, when he was invited to the film "Young of the Northern Fleet", where the young man played along with Igor Sklyar. In 1978, Arlauskas graduated from the Shchukin School, where he studied on the course of A.G. Burov. Initially, the young man planned to go to VGIK, but there he was "cut off" at the entrance examinations with the wording "incorrigible speech defects." He miraculously managed to take the exams to Pike, hitting on the last day of auditions, and managed to please the commission so much that he was immediately allowed into the third round.

After Algis received his diploma, he moved to a permanent job at the Moscow Youth Theater, where he worked for the next 5 years. In 1981 he met again on the set with Igor Sklyar - they worked together on the musical film “Take care of women”.

In it, Algis got the role of Sergei, an employee of a shipyard. It was then that the young actor met a woman who later became his wife - Marina Shimanskaya, who played Lyuba, the captain of the ship (originally, this role was to go to Elena Tonunts, but she ended up playing Galya).

The biggest creative success in the actor's biography was an invitation to shoot Gaidaev's comedy Sportloto-82. In the first year, 55 million Soviet viewers saw the film, and after the premiere, Arlauskas woke up famous.

Later, however, Algis never spoke in enthusiastic tones about this work, but is grateful to Leonid Gaidai for the fact that he contributed to the culmination of his acting career. Soon after the filming of "Sportloto-82" was completed, Algis decided that he wanted to move from actors to directors, and in 1987 he successfully graduated from the directing department of VGIK.

In 1991, the artist moved to his mother's homeland, to the Spanish city of Bilbao, where he plunged into serious work. Arlauskas is the author of several documentary works, in particular, the film "The Touch" about the deaf-blind scientist Alexander Suvorov, the series "To Live and Die in Russia" about Spanish political emigrants, the film "The Conspiracy of the Mad" about the dreamer Enrique, who is building a theater in the mountains. His directorial work has been awarded prizes at prestigious international film festivals.

In addition, in Spain, he and his wife founded a film school, which trains future actors and screenwriters. Since 2008, Arlauskas began to frequent Moscow and resumed his work in Russian cinema.

He married Marina Shimanskaya in 1979. The couple had two children - Olga and Alexander. The daughter later left for Moscow, and the son chose to stay in Bilbao.

Because of the birth of Olga, Arlauskas almost disrupted the filming of Sportloto-82 - Marina gave birth to her just a couple of days before they began and stayed with the child in the hospital. Algis remained at this time with his family, although angry telegrams flew from Crimea, where the work was going on, and left only when he could see his daughter.

In their youth, Algis and Marina were considered one of the most beautiful acting couples in the USSR, and their joint photos often appeared in the press. The couple's family life seemed peaceful and prosperous, so it was a great shock for the audience when they announced their divorce in 2016.

Shimanskaya appeared on the air of the Let Them Talk program, where she said that Arlauskas had exchanged her for another. The homewoman turned out to be her own longtime friend, who lived in Bilbao, where she and Algis met.

According to Marina, the divorce was difficult for her, but she was able to come to terms with what happened, although she did not subsequently establish her personal life. The former spouses continue to communicate and teach together at an acting school.

Now Algis is working on several projects as a director. His last major creation was the film "Anna the Detective", released in 2016.
