Biathlete Alexei Anatolyevich Volkov was born on April 5, 1988 in the city of Raduzhny, located in the Tyumen region. As a child, he, like his younger brother Alexander Volkov, became interested in cross-country skiing. Supporting their children in their desire to play sports, the parents gave their sons under the guidance of a talented coach Andrei Kolesnichenko.

In 2003, both Alexey and Alexander Volkovs, who had already achieved a fairly high level of skill in cross-country skiing, turned their attention to biathlon. The young age allowed both skiers to change their occupation and hope for a successful career in biathlon.

Ivan Zelenin and Petr Dubasov played the role of mentors for young Alexei Volkov for some time, and in 2009 the athlete got into the regional junior team under the tutelage of Sergei Altukhov and Valery Zakharov. Soon after, the biathlete took part in the World Cup for the first time in his career, at one of the stages in Sweden. However, then Alexei Volkov did not succeed in achieving significant success: he took 74th place very far from the prize ceremony.

In 2009, the biathlete also took part in the individual race in Canada, as part of the World Junior Championships. This performance turned out to be much more successful for Volkov: the young athlete won the gold medal from his rivals. At the same championship, Alexey was awarded a silver medal as part of the national team in the relay.

The purposeful biathlete was not going to stop there, and therefore he was intensively preparing for the European Junior Championships, which that year was organized on the basis of sports complexes in Ufa. At this prestigious competition, Volkov won bronze in the pursuit, and was also awarded a gold medal as part of the Russian team in the relay race.

Then Alexei was one of the most titled juniors in the whole country and even received a new car as a gift from the head of the Tyumen region administration as a recognition of his merits.

Quite often, successful juniors turn into mediocre "middle peasants" in their adult sports career, but this did not happen with Alexei Volkov. Being an excellent speed skier and demonstrating the highest shooting accuracy (about 90%, which can be called one of the best indicators), the biathlete continued to diligently prepare for the upcoming sports competitions.

The well-deserved reward for his hard work was not long in coming. In 2010, the athlete went to the European Championships in Estonia. Alexey competed in four disciplines and in each of them he managed to win one of the prizes. So, in the pursuit race, the Russian was the leader, in the relay and sprint race he received silver medals, and in the individual race Volkov was awarded “bronze”.

In 2010 Volkov also for the first time "fit" into the framework of the flower ceremony at one of the World Cup races. At the stage in Holmenkollen, he successfully shot and ran back in the sprint race, winning the fourth place and showing the best indicators at that time since the beginning of his sports career.

In the 2011/2012 season, the young biathlete took up the World Cup in earnest. The real breakthrough in his career happened in early 2012 in Oberhof. It was there that Alexei first performed in the men's relay at the Cup stage, and in this race the representatives of Russia managed to win silver medals. Along with Volkov, the famous Russian biathlon stars Anton Shipulin, Evgeny Ustyugov and Evgeny Garanichev ran the baton.

The 2012/2013 season was also productive for Alexey Volkov. The athlete took two gold medals at once within the World Cup: in Ostersund, in the mixed relay race, and in Oberhof, in the relay race for men. At the same time, the athlete performed well at the Russian Open Cup. He was awarded “silver” in the sprint race, and in the pursuit he managed to come to the finish line first.

At the 2012 Russian Biathlon Championship, Volkov became the first in the relay competition and lost to only one opponent in the mass start.

The 2013/2014 season in the context of the World Cup was marked for Alexei by receiving two silver medals: first he was on the second step of the podium after the mass start in Oberhof, and then won the same place in the individual race, beating even his teammate Evgeny Ustyugov. At the 2013 Russian Championships, Volkov received a silver medal for an excellent sprint, won the same medal in the pursuit race, and also ended up second in the relay competition.

During the 2014/2015 season, the biathlete managed to win bronze in the relay at the difficult stage of the World Cup in Oberhof, and then won gold in the single mixed relay in Nove Mesto, where his partner was Yana Romanova.

In 2014, Alexey Volkov, as part of the Russian national team, became the relay champion of the Sochi Winter Olympic Games.

In 2015/2016, the biathlete became the third in the individual race in Ostersund, intercepted the “silver” in the relay in Ruhpolding from his rivals, and also performed best of all in the relay in Hochfilzen.
