Biography
Legendary actor, People's Artist of the RSFSR, Laureate of the State Prize of Russia Alexei Petrenko became famous for his talented reincarnations and surprisingly realistic images in theater and cinema. He is one of that small cohort of Russian cinema stars who are capable of roles in a variety of genres and roles. Peter the First, Joseph Stalin, Abbot Faria, Grigory Rasputin, merchant Mokiy Parmyonich Knurov - each role of this wonderful actor was an accurate hit on the target and was forever remembered by the audience.
Alexey Vasilyevich Petrenko was born on March 26, 1938 in the Ukrainian SSR, in the village of Chemer, Chernigov region. According to unconfirmed data, his passport has a different date - April 1, 1938. This happened because the parents were able to make a record of the birth of their son only a few days after his birth, because there was no village council in Chemer, and they had to get to the neighboring village.
How and where did the village boy get the dream to go on stage - history is silent. But after graduating from school, Alexey Petrenko went to enroll in a theater university. He chose the Kharkov Theater Institute, but the guy managed to become his student only the third time.
After each failure, Alexei went to work so as not to "sit on the neck" of his parents. For almost three years he worked in a smithy in Chernigov. And if the third attempt had not been successful, Petrenko would certainly have gone to the army. And since his growth turned out to be gigantic - 190 centimeters - the guy would certainly have been taken to the fleet, postponing the beginning of his acting career for four long years.

Theater
In 1961, Alexey Petrenko received a diploma from the Kharkov Theater University, having successfully completed the course of the People's Artist of the USSR Ivan Maryanenko. By distribution, the aspiring actor got into the Zaporozhye Music and Drama Theater named after Nikolai Shchors. On this stage, he played his first roles.
Two years later, he changed the stage of the Zaporozhye theater to the stage of the Donetsk Russian drama theater. But even here he stayed only for a year: a promising and very bright young artist was noticed by the chief director and artistic director of the Leningrad Lensovet Theater Igor Vladimirov and made every effort to lure the young man to himself.
After several successful years of service at the Lensovet Theater, Aleksey Petrenko set off "on a free float": he often changed the stage, choosing only those roles that he liked. The artist once admitted that he always adhered to the principle "it is better a little and sensible than omnivorous."
Soon, Alexei Petrenko appears on the stages of the most famous Moscow theaters: since 1977 he played in the drama theater on Malaya Bronnaya, since 1978 he shone on the stage of the Moscow Art Theater for four years. Later, the audience watched the talented performance of the artist in the capital's Theater "School of Contemporary Play" and the Taganka Theater.
Theatergoers of the age still remember his brilliant role of Koki in the production of "Serso" directed by Anatoly Vasiliev. The performance was an overwhelming success and ran for four years in a row, until the mid-80s.
Later, Petrenko brilliantly reincarnated as the desperate Satin from the play "At the Bottom". In total, Alexei Petrenko played about 100 roles in theater and cinema.

Movies
Since 1991, Alexey Vasilyevich Petrenko has been a staff actor at the Maxim Gorky Film Studio. His cinematic biography is no less rich and rich than theatrical biography. But such is the magic of television that it is after the appearance on the screen that the artist becomes widely known.
Petrenko's debut on the screen took place in 1967. Alexei Vasilyevich was offered a small role in Viktor Sokolov's melodrama "The Day of Sun and Rain": he played a farce waiter. The debut was successful, and in the early 70s, the actor was offered the first major roles. In the black-and-white two-part film King Lear, directed by Grigory Kozintsev, based on the famous Shakespearean tragedy, Alexey Petrenko was reincarnated as Oswald.
The first big role of Petrenko was Peter the Great in the cult film by Alexander Mitta "The Tale of How Tsar Peter Married the Arap." In the performance of the actor, the autocrat turned out to be what most historians describe him: stern, but fair. In this picture, Alexei Petrenko played in a successful duet with Vladimir Vysotsky, who appeared in the guise of arap Ibrahim Hannibal.
Another starring role was played by Alexei Petrenko in 1981 in the historical drama Agony by Elem Klimov. The artist was entrusted with the main character - Grigory Rasputin. The rights to the film were sold abroad: the picture was seen in France, Italy and America, it received many awards, including the Golden Eagle Grand Prix.
On the Soviet screen "Agony" was released only in 1985. In addition to Petrenko, it was played by the key characters Anatoly Romashin, Alisa Freindlikh and Leonid Bronevoy. Alexei Vasilievich managed to convey the hot, unbridled disposition of Rasputin with incredible accuracy.
Later, Alexey Petrenko was repeatedly attracted by directors for roles where it was required to play strong personalities. Several times he played Stalin, reincarnated as Ivan the Terrible and ataman Platov. But the actor played weak, desperate people just as well: you can see this by watching the social drama of Dinara Asanova "Trouble", where he perfectly played the village alcoholic Kuligin.
Later, Alexey Petrenko repeatedly proved his incredible talent for reincarnation, playing a variety of characters. He became either the vile Svidrigailov in Crime and Punishment, the merchant Mokiy Parmyonich Knurov in The Cruel Romance, or the pilot Stroganov in the drama Twenty Days Without War by Alexei German.
In the new century, Alexey Petrenko also did not get lost and was one of the most demanded artists in Russian cinema. In 2003, a new adaptation of Fyodor Dostoevsky's novel The Idiot was released. In the series of the same name by Vladimir Bortko, Alexei Petrenko got the image of General Ivolgin, a half-mad drunken man, whose character the artist conveyed with stunning realism. The main characters of the drama were played by Yevgeny Mironov, Vladimir Mashkov and Lidia Velezheva.
Fans again saw their favorite actor in 2006: Alexey Petrenko appeared in the film adaptation of Boris Pasternak's novel Doctor Zhivago. In the series of the same name directed by Alexander Proshkin, Alexey Vasilyevich played Faddey Kazimirovich, once again proving to the audience and film critics that they have a real talent.
In 2007, Petrenko brilliantly played the fifth juror, retired and former Metrostroy employee in the acclaimed legal detective Nikita Mikhalkov "12". In this film, a constellation of artists was collected: Sergey Makovetsky, Valentin Gaft, Nikita Mikhalkov, Sergey Garmash and many others, whose names have long been known to movie lovers.
The audience received a new surprise from the talented actor in 2009, when the psychological drama "Bury Me Behind the Skirting Board", based on the story of Pavel Sanaev, was released. Alexey Petrenko played Sasha's grandfather.
In the same year, the Rossiya TV channel hosted the premiere of the historical series Wolf Messing: He Who Seen Through Time. The dramatic tape was warmly received by both viewers and film critics and scored high ratings. Alexei Petrenko once again reincarnated as the omnipotent Joseph Stalin.
2010 was marked by the premiere of a military drama, Nikita Mikhalkov's dilogy Burnt by the Sun-2: Imminence, but the most expensive Russian film with a budget of $ 40 to $ 55 million was in store for the box office. In December 2011, viewers watched the 13-episode television version of the film, in which they saw Alexei Petrenko as an elderly lieutenant-accountant. As expected, there was not a single complaint about the artist's work: according to established habit, he “gave it all out” on the set at full strength.
Alexey Petrenko also starred in the New Year comedy "Yolki-2", which appeared at the box office in mid-December 2011. In this melodrama, he reincarnated as Grigory Pavlovich Zemlyanikin, the pilot and lover of Yulia Snegireva. In 2012 and 2014, the actor, beloved by millions, appeared in the TV series "Petrovich" and "The Leaving Nature".
Critics and viewers, in addition to the named roles, as the best performed by Alexei Petrenko, note the images of Podkolesin in "The Marriage", journalist Paul Dick in "TASS is authorized to declare" and Abbot Faria in "Prisoner of the If Castle". The artist's filmography is more than 80 films and TV series.
In addition to acting, the artist was often involved in dubbing films and audiobooks. Alexey Petrenko especially loved to voice Russian fairy tales and at one time recorded a 24-episode "fairy-tale" cycle. Once he admitted that when he retires, he will go to kindergartens for free and read fairy tales to children. In 2016, the hero Coppelius spoke in the voice of Petrenko in the puppet cartoon "Hoffmaniada".
One of the artist's last films was the Franco-Russian film Victor, which was released in 2014. Key roles in the thriller went to Gerard Depardieu and Elizabeth Hurley. The film premiered in Moscow in early September 2014, and was seen in New York in October.
Alexey Petrenko was an Orthodox person and a deeply religious person. It is known that in July 2010 he was elected a member of the Patriarchal Council for Culture from the Russian Orthodox Church.
fact
Personal life
The artist was married three times. The first wife of Alexei Petrenko was the singer Alla Petrenko, with whom he lived for 19 years. For a long time, the wife was a real support for her husband, who made a career on stage and in cinema. In this marriage, a daughter, Pauline, was born, but in 1979 the couple separated.
Soon, Alexei Petrenko married a second time: a famous journalist, former theater columnist Galina Kozhukhova-Petrenko became his wife. In this marriage, there were no common children, but Alexei Vasilyevich had an excellent relationship with his stepson Mikhail Kozhukhov, who, like his mother, became a journalist and TV presenter. For some time, 15-year-old Polina lived with her father and his new family, but after a quarrel that happened, Alexei Petrenko's relationship with his daughter soured. Polina went to her mother and now lives in Germany.
In 2009, Galina Kozhukhova died. The artist did not remain alone for long: a year later, his personal life improved, he married the journalist Azima Rasulovna Abdumaminova, an ethnic Uzbek. She moved to her beloved man from Bishkek with two youngest daughters (she has four children in total). The significant age difference - 32 years old - did not become an obstacle to the happy life of the spouses. They often appeared together at public events and film premieres in which the artist played.
fact
Death
Alexey Petrenko, despite his strong physique and impressive height, did not shine with good health. During the filming of the drama "Agony" in the early 70s, he was first hospitalized with an attack of angina pectoris. Heart attacks with which he was admitted to the hospital happened in 2006 and 2011. In 2012, he broke his ankle, but then everything worked out - the actor quickly recovered and again plunged headlong into work.
Alexey Petrenko died suddenly: death overtook him on February 22, 2017, a few weeks before his 79th birthday. The cause of death has not yet been established, it is only known that the actor died without regaining consciousness.
The death of the great artist was unexpected for everyone, because he was cheerful and full of plans, two weeks before his death he went to the Cosmonaut Training Center in Star City, where a video was shot for the song of the leader of the Motor-Roller group Ilyas Autov “Do you remember, brother, how it is It was?". Alexei Petrenko in this video got the role of an astronaut who flew into orbit with oranges.
