Biography
Alexey Khomich is the first star name in the history of Soviet football. It will then be recognized by all Lev Yashin, Eduard Streltsov, Oleg Blokhin and other players. And then, in the postwar 40s, thanks to the talent of the goalkeeper Khomich, the winning country was able to prove its sports superiority.
The skill with which the goalkeeper defended his home goal did not bring him great awards and high titles, but he was appreciated and recognized all over the world, and the goalkeeper himself was dubbed the Tiger for the natural power of the jump and incredible courage in a fight with an opponent.
fact
Childhood and youth
The talented goalkeeper was born on March 14, 1920 in Dubrovka near Moscow. The boy's childhood cannot be called carefree. Grew up without a father, mother Anna Petrovna is an illiterate woman, in order to feed herself and her son, she wandered around rich houses, doing various household chores. They lived wherever they had - either where the mother worked, or with distant relatives. Only in 1930 was the woman allocated a tiny room from the meat processing plant, where she got a job.
Little Alyosha learned early to be independent: due to the busyness of his mother, he enrolled in school, quickly mastered literacy. As an active boy, he loved sports most of all. His first choice was the acrobatics section, then the courtyard boys carried away football.
Alyosha could chase the ball across the field for hours or defend the goal, came home lathered, dirty, with torn trousers and worn out shoes, which were only suitable for garbage. The mother, who saved every penny, categorically forbade her son to engage in this "barbaric sport". The boy had to obey.
However, young Khomich did not stop looking for himself in sports. He continued to play acrobatics, enrolled in the athletics section and became interested in volleyball, attending all city matches. In addition, the promotion of sports is doing its job. Alyosha does not leave the school library, where he reads articles about football and volleyball, studies the technique of the game, positions on the field, at the gates, etc. And when he read Lev Kassil's story "Goalkeeper of the Republic", he fired up a dream to repeat the fate of the protagonist. And soon fate gave him this chance.
In 1935, competitions were held between the courtyard football and volleyball teams. Alexey, as promised to his mother, played for the volleyball team, which won with triumph. And on the way home, the boy met a friend who was running in search of a goalkeeper. He persuaded Khomich to help out the guys and defend the honor of his native street.
The game was intense, but Alexey managed to deflect the opponent's balls with powerful jumps. True, the score was ruined by a mistake by the goalkeeper: after repelling the blow, he again entered the goal with the ball caught behind the fallen cap. But despite this, the guys were happy with the newbie's game.

Football
So Alexey became the goalkeeper of the street team. Together, they persuaded Anna Petrovna to lift the ban on her son's play. And soon the young goalkeeper got into the second team of the Tagansky district. In 1936, after winning the interdistrict tournament, Khomich was noticed by the footballers of the "Fighter" club of the Moscow meat-packing plant, and he received his first playing skills from such club team stars as Viktor Talilikhin, Vladimir Nikanorov, goalkeeper Vladimir Babkin.
After school, the young man gets a job as a turner at a car factory, but continues to play for his native "Fighter", first in the second, and then in the first team. And in 1940, Khomich was invited to the team of the Moscow Pischevik, where he immediately entered the field in a series of away games in the USSR championship, and then improved his skills in internal games.
However, soon they had to forget about football: Khomich was drafted into the army, the guy in the border troops went to the southern borders. And with the beginning of the war, a young border guard was sent to Moscow, to a special purpose regiment.
In 1943, when the superiority of forces was already on the side of the USSR, the top management decided to hold friendly football matches between the allied teams. The first tournament called "Shah's Cup" was held with the Iranian team "Darai". Khomich was entrusted to defend the gates of the Soviet national team. After a devastating 3-0 victory for the Union, the Shah personally expressed his admiration for the goalkeeper.
In 1944, a significant event took place in Alexei's biography - the footballer joins the ranks of the Moscow Dynamo, a team in which his talent as a goalkeeper will be revealed and world recognition will come. The star goalkeeper's debut game took place in September 1944 against Wings of the Soviets (Moscow) and ended in failure of the Dynamo team.
In general, the team was going through hard times until Mikhail Yakushin was appointed coach. Thanks to the talent of Khomich and other outstanding players, he pulled Dynamo to the championship level. The guys proved it at the very first post-war national championship: 19 wins and 73 goals at the rivals' goal.
The brilliant play of Khomich, who was simply called Homa in the team, was discussed by all the fans, amazed at how such a short (172 cm tall) goalkeeper manages to get balls even from the farthest corner. Khomich, like a Shaolin monk, soared above the ground in an incredible leap, catching the ball with his long arms. And it was an incredible sight.
And soon it happened to be seen by the world fans of the game of millions. In 1945, the British Football Association invited Dynamo to play a series of matches with the best clubs in the country - Chelsea, Cardiff City, Arsenal and Rangers.
The British did not expect much agility from their opponents, believing that the game would be on the side of the home team. However, the very first game against Chelsea ended 3: 3. Dynamo won twice out of four games against the English and took a draw twice.
After the games, all British newspapers wrote about Khomich, respectfully calling him Tiger for his daring style of play. There is a beautiful legend about this memorable trip in football circles, but no one undertakes to confirm it. Allegedly at a gala reception, the vice-president of Chelsea FC stated:
To which Khomich replied:
Alexey Petrovich played 6 stellar seasons for Dynamo. In 1947, memorable trips to Sweden and Norway took place. And in 1949, Dynamo played the next championship brilliantly. For Aleksey Khomich, he became the last one in his native metropolitan club.
In the early 50s, the goalkeeper received a number of serious injuries and took a long time to recover. In the same period, the head coach was changed due to the resignation of Yakushin. In addition, Dynamo's indicators have significantly decreased, and the attitude towards older players has begun to change not for the better. These factors influenced Khomich's departure from the club. The legendary goalkeeper was released with the offensive wording "for the loss of a sense of reaction."
From 1953 to 1956, Khomich played for Dynamo Minsk and took the team to a new level. With him, the Minskers first got on the podium, winning bronze. In 1956, the legendary Tiger decided to hang goalkeeper gloves on a nail. And he devoted many more years to coaching, bringing up many good football players, including a student Lev Yashin, who surpassed his teacher.
In his post-game life, Khomich's main hobby was photography: for almost 20 years he worked as a sports photojournalist for the Football newspaper and traveled half the world with a camera in his hands.
fact
Personal life
Khomich's youth was so filled with his favorite game that sometimes he had to forget about his personal life. But the time came, and Alexei met the girl Valentina, who became his wife. In the spring of 1950, the couple had a son named Alexei after his father. Soon the youngest, Vladimir, was born.
However, Alexey Petrovich, who raised so many guys in sports, could not find contact with his own children. The sons did not obey their father, they were in conflict with each other. Alexei got involved with criminals, and his father could not do anything, which was very acute.
fact
Death
In 1978, Khomich's beloved wife died. This broke the athlete - he drank and after 2 years, on May 30, 1980, he died of cirrhosis of the liver. His sons followed him: Vladimir died of cancer before he was 25 years old, and Alexei was found murdered. As suggested by the investigation, the guy was dealt with due to large debts.
On the grave monument, the outstanding Khomich was depicted with a camera behind the football goal. Another tribute to the master is a memorial plaque on the facade of house No. 41 on the capital's Kutuzovsky Avenue, where the Tiger of Soviet Football has lived for the last 30 years.
